According to The Phoenix, former kiddie-TV host Gene London is opening his closet — — to reveal his MAE WEST collection.
• • His eye-catching "Movie Star Costume Show" just opened in Reading, Pennsylvania. You can see Mae's classic costumes along with outfits expressly designed for the big screen from now until spring of next year.
• • Quoting directly from The Phoenix here: I talked to Gene London at his Reading, PA climate-controlled studio where he has stored the exquisite movie star costumes he will be sharing with the public on October 2 at the Reading Public Museum. The exhibit will run until May 2010 partnered by Albright College [located at 13th and Bern Streets in Reading, PA 19612]. His knowledge of former movie stars and their costumes ignited memories of their movies that I watched in 1930, 1940, 1950 and on reruns today. ...

We're not in Kansas — — but MAE WEST was somehow lassoed in when the local second graders and third graders presented their tuneful frolics “Lights! Camera! Action!” on Tuesday 3 March 2009 in Pratt, Kansas.
• • This schoolhouse salute to the movies was presented at Liberty Middle School auditorium [300 S Luka Street, Pratt, KS 67124].
• • Yesterday their ambitious show featured special appearances including Mae West along with Sean Connery, John Wayne, John Travolta, Clark Gable, SpongeBob, Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Esther Williams, Tom Hanks, Gene Wilder, Indiana Jones, Hannah Montana, Raven Symone, and Harry Potter.
• • The young pupils sang and danced to a cinema soundtrack, performing choreographed numbers from "SpongeBob SquarePants," "Finding Nemo," "The Polar Express," "Shreck," and "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory."
• • The audience applauded these intrepid second graders and third graders — — and, frankly, we haven't seen a stagebill this compelling since the night they raided Minsky's. MAE WEST has Irish heritage so she would not have minded that an Irish newspaper predicted which man she would have voted for — — even though the columnist got it all wrong. A confirmed leftie, Mae even wrote fervent letters of support on behalf of the socialist Eugene V. Debs, therefore, I sincerely doubt the Empress of Sex would have marched to the tune of John McCain.
• • K. Myers wrote: Moving on to film, Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart are easy: volunteers with the USAAF when they could easily have dodged combat, both would be McCain men. Gary Cooper, McCain also. Mae West, a McCain girl (but break the news to him gently: John, you're probably not the first). John Ford, McCain. That despicable, draft-dodging fraud, John Wayne, likewise. And Hollywood today? During the 1930s, MAE WEST's motion pictures had exclusive engagements at both the New York Paramount and the Brooklyn Paramount [385 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11201] near DeKalb Avenue. 
• • The Brooklyn Eagle reminds us of this: During its heyday, up to 4,000 patrons at a time sat to watch movies accompanied by “colossal” stage shows at the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre.
• • The last show on August 22,1962 attracted around 300 patrons to see a John Wayne feature.
• • Gracing its ornate stage during its reign as the mecca of Brooklyn entertainment were such celebrities as Mae West, Frank Sinatra, Liberace, Rudy Vallee, Ginger Rogers, Bing Crosby, Eddie Cantor, George Jessel, and most of the big band era orchestras.
• • Basketball fans now sit to watch Long Island University games in the former movie palace auditorium.

• • Columnist Amy Graff writes: Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn stayed here during production of The Sea of Grass; Burt Lancaster and Lee Remick were guests when they made The Hallelujah Trail. The list of Hollywood stars who bedded down at the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, N.M., goes on and on: MAE WEST, Gene Autry, Jack Benny, Humphrey Bogart, Kirk Douglas, Henry Fonda, Ronald Reagan, James Stewart, John Wayne, Burt Lancaster, and many others.
• • Columnist Amy Graff writes: Built in 1937 by R. E. "Griff" Griffith, brother of movie mogul D. W. Griffith, the El Rancho's rustic charm was attractive to the movie makers and stars filming in the surrounding red rock canyons. Their autographed photos line the walls of the spectacular two-story lobby with dark wood beams, Navajo rugs, mounted trophy heads, a circular staircase, and an enormous stone fireplace.

In May, Dothan will honor one of Alabama's biggest football heroes and film stars — — who was in a black and white classic with MAE WEST. 
• • Anyone who knows westerns knows Johnny Mack Brown, who first made his name on the field in Tuscaloosa. A few years later, movie goers would know him as a character actor featured in more than 160 films with Mae West, John Wayne, and Greta Garbo.
• • Born on 1 September 1904 in Alabama, Johnny Mack Brown died at age 70 in Los Angeles (on 14 November 1974) of a cardiac condition.
• • Mae-mavens became acquainted with the six-foot-one actor when he played the role of Brooks Claybourne, a good time Charlie, in "Belle of the Nineties" [1934].
• • An All-American halfback while attending the University of Alabama, Johnny Mack Brown would choose the silver screen over the green grass of the football field when he graduated. Signed to a contract with MGM in 1926, Brown debuted in Slide, Kelly, Slide (1927) with William Haines in a film about an all-American sport — — baseball.
