The list of Hollywood stars who bedded down at the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, N.M., goes on and on: MAE WEST, Gene Autry, Jack Benny, Humphrey Bogart, Kirk Douglas, Henry Fonda, Ronald Reagan, James Stewart, John Wayne, Burt Lancaster, and many others.
• • Columnist Amy Graff writes: Built in 1937 by R. E. "Griff" Griffith, brother of movie mogul D. W. Griffith, the El Rancho's rustic charm was attractive to the movie makers and stars filming in the surrounding red rock canyons. Their autographed photos line the walls of the spectacular two-story lobby with dark wood beams, Navajo rugs, mounted trophy heads, a circular staircase, and an enormous stone fireplace.

MAE WEST appeared on many stages and on many pages, for instance, in the venerable Players Directory, which just celebrated their 31st anniversary this month.
• • First printed in January 1937, the Academy Players Directory is the industry's oldest and best-known casting directory. The first issue was a 248-page publication listing 1,257 players, including names like Mae West, James Stewart, Gene Autry, Bette Davis, Mary Astor, and Gary Cooper.
• • To be a part of the Players Directory [headquartered in Burbank, California 91506], you must be a member of an actor's union. Acceptable unions in the United States are SAG, AFTRA and AEA.

It is a happy seventieth anniversary for the venerable Players Directory, whose first issue was printed in January 1937 and included MAE WEST and the hottest in Hollywood.

Their first issue was a 248-page publication listing 1,257 players, including names like Mae West, James Stewart, Gene Autry, Bette Davis, Mary Astor, and Gary Cooper. Must be quite a collectible — — these 1937 editions!
• • They say that their printed Directory continues to be a valuable tool in the casting process and the most recent printed issue includes thousands of listings, among them many of today's best-known actors.
