• • Born in Florida, pretty Frances Langford [4 April 1913 —  11 July 2005] was a singer who was featured on radio programs and also made film appearances.  In the month of July, it's nice to commemorate her, too.
• • On Wednesday, 31 July 1974 • •
• • "Sex is good for you," says Mae West. And an interview published in The Australian Women's Weekly began with that provocative, bold opening when they printed a profile of the sultry star. "I've never had anything to worry about," Mae assured the Aussie reporter. "It's always been success, success, success." ...

Producers are ready to sit down with her as soon as Mae completes driving her nightclub swine. Mae West: Rent Mae's Pillow

More and more lodge-owners are dedicating one unit to commemorate MAE WEST. Here are some "Mae West Room reviews" written by satisfied globe-trotters (but no pictures, alas).
• • The Mae West Room • •
• • Hotel Keizershof (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) • •
• • A traveler wrote: The Hotel Keizershof is located in a great location — — within walking distance of all the main attractions, yet in a quiet enclave. However, it can get loud if you have a room facing the canal. We stayed in the Mae West Room, the smallest of all the rooms. The room, very comfortable and clean, comes with a shared bathroom and shower, which was fine and we never had to wait.  . . .
• • The Inn at Long Lake (Naples, Maine) • •
• • A married couple wrote: We were in the Mae West Room. Place is very charming, friendly, and full of antiques and memorabilia. The veranda is a perfect spot to enjoy hors d' oeuvres and the innkeeper's fabulous cookies!
• • On Friday, 30 July 1937 • •
• • The headline read: "Marriage of Mae West — Court Order Sought." And the legal battle was ever so much longer than their relationship.
• • Los Angeles, July 28 — A petition by Frank Wallace, a vaudeville performer, for an order decreeing that he and Mae West, the film star, were still man and wife, was refused by the Court today. The Court was satisfied, however, that the two had been married on April 11, 1911.
• • Miss West admitted early this month that she had married Mr. Wallace in 1911, but denied that she had ever lived with him. She alleged that he had married again without having obtained a divorce from her.  Mr. Wallace brought an action to compel Miss West to admit their relationship and divide their community property, which, he said, exceeded £20,000.

• • On Tuesday, 30 July 1957 in The N.Y. Times • •
• • Mae West sued Hollywood Confidential Magazine for defamation and the trial began in early August 1957 in Los Angeles. On Tuesday, 30 July 1957, The N.Y. Times ran an item explaining the issues at stake. Mae submitted sworn depositions to avoid testifying in person.

• • The Court's order Is the outcome of a lawsuit brought by Mr. Wallace to compel her to admit the relationship, and to divide their joint property, which, he alleges, exceeds $100.000 dollars (£Aust 25,000).  Miss West for many years denied that she had ever been married, but early this month she admitted that Mr Frank Wallace became her husband 26 years ago. Miss West denied that she had ever lived with him, and alleged that he subsequently "remarried" without obtaining a divorce from her.  ...

Mae West: Bare Chest Act

The beefcake act dreamed up by MAE WEST proved to be outrageously successful and reporters from all over the USA hurried to Las Vegas to watch "The Mae West Revue." The concept and staging were quite ingenious. We've been posting the various reactions by American reporters in July 1954 and here's another.
• • "Mae West Introducing Beef Cake to Night Club" • •
• • LAS VEGAS (EE) — Mae West, at 62 still blonde and curvaceous, made her night club debut last night by introducing "beef cake" to saloon shows. The queen of comedy sex was greeted with whistles and cheers at the Hotel Sahara as she made her comeback to big time show business with her usual shoulder and hip wiggles and risque songs. But her retinue of eight muscular men, including Dick DuBois, Mr. America of 1954, brought down the house in what Miss West called "the first bare chest act for lady customers in history.
• • "I know what to give the women," she murmured after the show. "A woman likes to look at any male body."
• • "Loves Them All" • •
• • "Muscles, big or small men — — men, men, I love them all," Mae chanted in that slurring voice that helped make her a star of stage and screen.  ...

• • On Thursday, 29 July 1937 • •
• • Frank Wallace and the on-going lawsuit he initiated, to get the court to recognize his marriage in 1911 to Mae West, made enough waves in the news media. However, an item in the Los Angeles Citizen-News on Thursday, 29 July 1937 reported that Paramount Pictures "announced 98% of her fan mail had been favorable" despite the drawn-out divorce debacle.

• • Overheard in Hollywood • •
• • Claiming to be the oldest bar in Hot Springs, Arkansas (since 1905), The Ohio Club boasted that they fed drinks to the likes of Mae West, Al Jolson, and Al Capone. It was a Hollywood stars hang-out as well as a favored dining spot of gangsters.
