• • Lately, this stately structure [at 263 Prospect Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11215] — — which rents ballrooms and salons for meetings and catered affairs, but has not much in the way of overnight accommodations — — plans to expand.
• • A strategy will be needed in order to stare down the local community leaders, therefore, the owners are currently reminding everyone about its storied past when Sophie Tucker graced one of the 1910 programs, when gangster mobster Al Capone used to frequent their cellar speakeasy, and when presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan attended a gathering. 
• • No dates and no specific details are given about Mae West's purpose in being there. But the owners are telling the news media she was there — — and lazy reporters do not bother to check.

• • The motion picture "Every Day's a Holiday" [1938] starred Mae West and featured Edmund Lowe, Charles Butterworth, Charles Winninger, Lloyd Nolan, Walter Catlett, Chester Conklin, and Louis Armstrong.
• • Born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Chester Cooper Conklin [11 January 1886 — 11 October 1971] was an American comedian and actor. He appeared in over 280 films, about half of them in the silent era when his name really resonated. Gradually, he became a bit parts player and was cast as a cabby in "Every Day's a Holiday" — — in a memorable scene when Mae West's shady character has to cross the Brooklyn Bridge. • • It was a booking in the venerable Ryman Auditorium that brought the Brooklyn blonde to the southeastern part of the country.
• • Established in 1892 as a church, Ryman Auditorium [refurbished and still standing at 116 Fifth Avenue North, Nashville, TN 37219] is a National Historic Landmark that is continuing its more than 100-year music tradition by offering the best in entertainment. Incidentally, if you are ever in the area, Ryman does offer tours that showcase the legendary performers who have aroused enough applause to make paint flake from its walls — — such as Mae West, Rudolph Valentino, and W.C. Fields, along with country's most notable names.
• • In a recent article by Claudia Pinto — — "Nashville luxury suites lure celebs: Lavish rooms and VIP treatment keep stars coming back to Music City's hotels" [The Tennessean on 1 September 2009] — — it was noted that Union Station Hotel's 900-square-foot Presidential Suite (cost: $300 to $500 a night) has been the room of choice for high-level guests such as Mae West, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Warren G. Harding, Jimmy Carter, Mike Huckabee, Garth Brooks, Al Capone, Delbert McClinton, Steve Gill, among others.

The Canadian lady adores MAE WEST and Hallowe'en so, when her boyfriend of 14 years popped the question, the newly-weds decided to tie the knot on October 31st — — and the bride got her wish to be Mae for one day. 
• • Marty Mallaley, 60, and Grant Donaldson, 63, invited their guests to also come in costume.
• • To perform this marriage on Halloween night, their attorney Jan Phillips officiated dressed as a love drop. A darkened, fog-filled hallway led to the ceremony. Decorations included a six-foot coffin with a vampire bride in traditional white dress.
• • And 50 family members and friends gathered at the Fairvale Outing Association to see the wedding party, costumed as characters either from their favorite era or their favorite film.
• • The groom was a swashbuckling Jack Sparrow — — from Pirates of the Caribbean.
• • The bride's sister Sharol LeBlanc, the maid of honor, was a 1920s flapper.
• • Mallaley's brother, Nolan, who was the best man, was dressed as Al Capone. • • The bride channeled Diamond Lil herself by selecting a flamboyant black velvet, form-fitting skirt, a black velvet bustier with silver trim, and a huge black hat with feathers, covering a blond wig.
• • Marty Mallaley usually decorates her East Saint John home an entire month before the 31st. Now she will be celebrating her wedding anniversary on her favorite holiday and, on her mantel, the wedding portrait will show everyone that when Marty wanted to be the Brooklyn bombshell for a few hours, she did it right.

Mae West knew some shady characters — — and Champ Segal had a special place in his heart for Mae. 
• • Sunset Boulevard during the 1940s was where all the guys and dolls nightclubbed, gambled, brawled, and minted gossip. Harry "Champ" Segal, a former boxer and bookie, ran a little joint on the Strip that was disguised as a barbershop (not unlike the bookmaking and loan-sharking operation he ran in a midtown Manhattan barbershop). Nearby in Los Angeles, Champ's bosom buddy Benjamin Siegel had an office at the corner of Sunset and Vine, although Bugsy did not take walk-ins.
• • Although Champ Segal never won a title in the ring, the dapper hoodlum managed many prizefighters — — Charley "Phil" Rosenberg, Ace Hudson, Phil Kaplan, Freddy Beshore, Sal Belloise — — and had 118 fights himself, 78 of which he won by knock-outs.
• • Mae West enjoyed going to boxing matches and she got a kick out of the nattily dressed wheel-dealer. Champ Segal admired Mae and included anecdotes about their friendship in his book.
• • Born in Harlem in 1899, by 1917 Harry had an arrest record for possessing narcotics.
• • In 1927 he was locked up in connection with a homicide at his restaurant on St. Nicholas Avenue and West 112th Street. Throughout his hair-raising past he must have been taking notes for this biography that his brother published in November 1959, which was called "a daring and exciting book about the world of sports, gambling, gangsters, and politicians from the 1920s to the present day." Though Champ was as solitary a figure as Charlie Chaplin, astonishingly he did have a brother; Hyman's name appeared on the dustjacket: They Called Him Champ: the Story of Champ Segal and His Fabulous Era by Hyman R. Segal [NY: Citadel Press, 1959; 480 pages with b/w photographs].

• • November 1959 there was a book launch at Lindy's Restaurant with his buddies from Stillman's Gym.
• • That was a better November than nine years earlier for Champ Segal. On 1 November 1950 the 51-year-old bookie was arrested outside of the Park-Sheraton Hotel, where he'd been living. This was part of a Times Square round-up of gangsters by the police. Champ Segal slipped through the grasp of the city's legal eagles, however. The colorful con man was still being indicted in 1974 when he was age 77.
