• • It was a booking in the venerable Ryman Auditorium that brought the Brooklyn blonde to the southeastern part of the country.
• • Established in 1892 as a church, Ryman Auditorium [refurbished and still standing at 116 Fifth Avenue North, Nashville, TN 37219] is a National Historic Landmark that is continuing its more than 100-year music tradition by offering the best in entertainment. Incidentally, if you are ever in the area, Ryman does offer tours that showcase the legendary performers who have aroused enough applause to make paint flake from its walls — — such as Mae West, Rudolph Valentino, and W.C. Fields, along with country's most notable names.
• • In a recent article by Claudia Pinto — — "Nashville luxury suites lure celebs: Lavish rooms and VIP treatment keep stars coming back to Music City's hotels" [The Tennessean on 1 September 2009] — — it was noted that Union Station Hotel's 900-square-foot Presidential Suite (cost: $300 to $500 a night) has been the room of choice for high-level guests such as Mae West, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Warren G. Harding, Jimmy Carter, Mike Huckabee, Garth Brooks, Al Capone, Delbert McClinton, Steve Gill, among others.
• • Claudia Pinto added that the amenities offered are: In-room dining, marble bathrooms with steeping tubs or separate walk-in showers, plush bathrobes, Gilchrist & Soames skin care, and bath products.

A very special actor who worked with MAE WEST has met his final curtain.
• • Word comes that Mickey Carroll, one of the last surviving Munchkins from the iconic 1939 screen classic "The Wizard of Oz" died recently at age 89. It was his only motion picture but his brief cameos were most memorable. .
• • Born in St. Louis on 8 July 1919, Mickey Carroll's birthname was Michael Finocchiaro. The son of Italian immigrants who carved marble cemetery monuments, he grew up with a twin sister and four older siblings, all of whom are deceased.
• • It was a pituitary condition that caused Carroll's height to stop at 4-foot-3.
• • What he lacked in stature he made up for with an abundance of appeal, personality, and comedic timing. When presidential hopeful Franklin D. Roosevelt was campaigning in New York City, Mickey Carroll helped warm up the voters. He was also hired as a crowd-getter during Harry Truman's whistlestop campaign.
• • In St. Louis, Carroll tripped the light fantastic at the Muny Theater when he was still an elementary school pupil. Afterwards, he appeared in Chicago clubs and on the Orpheum Theater vaudeville circuit.
• • Expanding his specialties, Mickey Carroll also did Phillip Morris live radio ads — — "Call for Philip Morris!" — — and appeared in shows with Mae West. He followed up those successes with radio shows with George Burns, Gracie Allen, Jack Benny, and Al Jolson.
• • In November 2007, Mickey Carroll received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame along with six other surviving Munchkins: Ruth Duccini, Jerry Maren, Margaret Pellegrini, Meinhardt Raabe, Karl Slover, and Clarence Swensen.
• • Until January of this year, the pint-size performer enjoyed living in his own home in Bel-Nor. After he got a pacemaker, however, he began boarding with a caretaker, who told the press that he died in his sleep, very peacefully, and perhaps dreaming of following the yellow brick road in the wonderful land of Oz.• • Come up and see Mae every day online: http://MaeWest.blogspot.com/

Learn to draw MAE WEST. 
• • On Saturday, 11 August 2007 the Brownsville Historical Association is hosting a workshop that will teach you to draw a caricature of Mae West [or other celebrities] as part of the festivities surrounding the “Miguel Covarrubias: Caricuturista” exhibition.
• • Born in Mexico, Miguel Covarrubias was a popular artist in the early 20th century. He drew the era's most notable figures like MAE WEST — — whom he sketched for The New Yorker — — along with Franklin D. Roosevelt, Josef Stalin, Charlie Chaplin, and other VIPs all hilariously re-imagined via his exaggerated sketches.
• • This exhibit will be on display until 29 September 2007.• • In Texas, the Brownsville Heritage Complex is located at 1325 E. Washington Street.
