Mae West: East London Auction

MAE WEST impressionist Danny LaRue [26 July 1927 – 31 May 2009] — — once called the "most glamorous woman in the world" by Bob Hope — — always dressed to thrill.
• • Here is the late stage star wearing his "Mae West" gown, which is among several costumes that are to be auctioned at Brick Lane Music Hall in east London on 12 March 2010. [Photo: Brick Lane Music Hall/ PA].
• • Born Daniel Patrick Carroll in Cork, Ireland, Danny LaRue spared no expense for his lavish live appearances, when he was often accompanied by a 12-piece orchestra. In the 1960s he was among Britain's highest-paid entertainers. Awaiting auction-goers will be sumptuously beaded and sequined dresses, miles of lame, and a royal aviary of feathered frou-frou among the 90 ensembles to go under the hammer at Brick Lane Music Hall in east London where he regularly performed. Among these treasures are pantomime costumes; outfits worn in the West End hit "Hello, Dolly!" (which will be sold with mounted and framed original design drawings); gowns worn for music hall and cabaret performances; and head-dresses. My, oh my.
• • In between impersonating Mae West and other curvy bombshells during his six-decades-long career, Danny LaRue also triumphed in seven major shows including "Come Spy With Me" at the Whitehall Theatre, the "Danny La Rue Show" at the Aladdin at the London Palladium as well as the Prince of Wales theatre where Mae West triumphed sixty years ago in "Diamond Lil."
• • Danny LaRue appears in the documentary "All You Need Is Love: The Story Of Popular Music: Rude Songs (Vaudeville And Music Hall)," which can be seen on DVD. This film about the history of popular music in America focuses on music halls taking a look back at the concert halls that spawned a large-scale industry in the world of music, as well as the creative styles that sprung from it. Artists featured in concert footage and interviews include Mae West, Edith Piaf, Judy Garland, and more.
• • The auctioneers said the Victoria and Albert Museum has bought four costumes in advance of the sale. Tell them you heard about it on the MAE WEST BLOG.

Mae West: Portugal

A benefit in Lagoa last weekend, that raised funds for a local Donkey Sanctuary, staged a splashy tribute to three iconic artists — — MAE WEST, Edith Piaf, and Amy Winehouse — — and we will let The Portugal News tell the tale.
• • According to The Portugal News staff: Last year she swore she would never do another, this year she said the same, but thank goodness every year director Jenny Grainer changes her mind and puts together one of the region’s most fabulous nights of top acts for what has become the Annual Grand Variety Show — — all in the name of charity.
• • This year the Grand Variety Show — — held on Sunday night in Lagoa’s auditorium and hailed by a full house as the best to date — — raised a fantastic total of €3,572.55, made solely from ticket and raffle sales.
• • Of that amount, €730, raised from the raffle ticket sales alone, will be donated to the Donkey Sanctuary animal refuge, the rest benefiting Lagoa’s Santa Casa da Misericórdia.
• • Thirteen different acts took to the stage for Sunday evening’s show, none of whom had rehearsed together before and yet on the night came together beautifully. Never before had so many fantastic (and voluntary) performers shared a stage.
• • Following an introduction to the benefitting charities by Jenny Grainer, and a word from the evening’s ever-amusing host Ian Carfrae, the show kicked off with ‘Tributes to Iconic Artists.’
• • Tributes to Iconic Artists: 3 Divas of the Decade • •
• • Brilliant impersonations of Mae West (Lara Costa), Amy Winehouse (Carrie-Marie Bratley), and an eerily flawless Edith Piaf (Gloria Costa) followed the Stars Dance School’s toe-tapping tribute to the legendary Michael Jackson. Back-stage sources exclusively told The Portugal News that while notorious Amy did enjoy a glass of wine or two, Mae West and Edith Piaf were tea-total when they took to the stage and oddly none of them made diva-like demands — — except Mae West, whose requests were actually quite basic — — salt and vinegar crisps and a bottle of cold water.
• • The three ‘Divas of the Decade’ shared a dressing room and between them managed to put the world to rights as well as putting on one of the best performances of their careers. ...

Mae West: Ciro's

MAE WEST used to perform at the legendary Ciro's on Sunset Boulevard, Leonie Cooper reminds the British readers of The Guardian. London is seeing a resurgence of those glamourous nightspots. At the 2-year-old Pigalle Club [in London's Piccadilly], for instance, Eartha Kitt is still stepping out from behind the velvet drapes at the back of the stage. In her red dress slit to the thigh, 81-year-old Kitt is the epitome of supper-club chic.
• • Leonie Cooper writes: Hollywood movie stars of yore knew how to dine out in style. At Ciro's supper club on Sunset Boulevard — — a favourite of Marilyn Monroe and Lana Turner — — the entertainment was provided by luminaries such as Mae West, Edith Piaf, and Billie Holiday, while Bogie and Bacall used to eat at the Mocambo, a Brazilian-themed venue that was inhabited by a flock of showbiz parrots. This was the golden, maribou-trimmed era of supper clubs, yet now, despite lean times looming, ritzy restaurant-cum-nightclubs are experiencing a revival. ...
• • Cooper has researched an enjoyable feature and you can read the rest online in The Guardian.
