Revered! Wow! What a hallmark of exceptional humanity.

Days ago, French fashion flaunter Jean Paul Gaultier presented a runway look inspired by MAE WEST.
• • Describing the Oscar-worthy Gaultier creations for readers of The New York Times, columnist Cathy Horyn wrote: "As the models came out in wafting mousseline gowns and velvet columns, headshots of screen legends — — Mae West, Louise Brooks, Audrey Hepburn, Rita Hayworth — — swam across the celestial blue backdrop."
• • Covering the show in Paris, front row couture-critic Godfrey Deeny also seemed to be enjoying the melodramatic, improbable spectacle.
• • Godfrey Deeny writes: Lights, camera, Gaultier! French fashion's enfant terrible Jean Paul Gaultier found it, at the movies with a fall 2009 haute couture collection on Wednesday, July 8, inspired throughout by cinema.
• • Gaultier telegraphed his punch to guests as soon as they walked in the door of his Paris headquarters by naming each area of the show space after a major studio.
• • Each look was named after a famous movie, opening with curvaceous Dutch model Lara Stone as Le Mepris of "Contempt," Jean Luc Godard's classic starring Jack Palance and Brigitte Bardot about the cynicism of film making. Lara Stone strutted out in leather trench-coat and seamed tights, her blonde hair piled up in a beehive just like Bardot in the movie. . . .
• • At times, the more outlandish looks seemed almost like living organisms, such as the crocodile scale ensemble that represented "Night of the Iguana." And few couturiers can draw out such fine craftsmanship from their ateliers as Gaultier — — whose satin Mae West look seemed made out of Wurlitzer organ pipes.
• • Gaultier took his concept even further with several outfits literally made of film strips, including one called "Rushes." The whole thing garnered great applause from an audience that included Kylie Minogue and Mickey Rourke.

MAE WEST popped up in a discussion about what types of gals today's guys really go for. Strictly speaking, we're not sure that sex-kitten Bardot is aging "gracefully" over in France. And Monroe, who died at age 36, could not possibly have hiccuped in the direction of the word "matron." But on with the excerpt!
• • Teed off columnist Ryan McKee concluded his weekly screed with this parting harrumph: As we approach 2010, the 1990s dumb-girl look has reached critical mass. Cuties like Meg Ryan have become plastic surgery nightmares.
• • We need to return to the days of Marilyn Monroe [1926 — 1962] and Brigitte Bardot [b. 1934], when women wore their curves and did their best to grow old gracefully. The days where Mae West and Betty Grable didn’t need Stoli Blueberry and a frat boy to feel good. Guys, let’s stop rewarding women for acting like little girls because, as good as the immediate gratification is, the long-term consequences of synthetic mess-faces and artificial conversation won’t be worth it.

Henri Sabin did an outstanding likeness of MAE WEST in 1936, perhaps as a work commissioned by Paramount Pictures.
• • The Frenchman seems to have relocated to Hollywood during the 1930s, where he found work sketching for motion picture industry books. Using pastels, Sabin created softly glamorous and luminous portraits of the screen royalty of the era. In addition to the Empress of Sex, Sabin did a colorful bust of Joan Crawford, Merle Oberon, and the Mexican lovely Delores Del Rio.
• • In 1965, Sabin turned out a lush oil painting of Parisienne sex kitten Brigitte Bardot [born 1934]. Continuing his specialty of celebrity portraiture, Sabin also did a sizable oil of boxer Mohammed Ali.

The Florida Times-Union did an article on "The Evolution of Sex Symbols" — — and MAE WEST was accorded her due as a bombshell and a sexpot. Encompassing both male and female sexpot types, the writers' categories included: Bombshells and Sexpots, The sex bomb, Bikini Babes, Flappers, The red-hot lover, The femme fatale, The girl next door, The gamine, Heroin chic chick, The bimbo, et cetera.
• • What's the difference between screen queens who are "bombshells and sexpots" versus "sex bombs"? Indeed we wondered, too. Read on.
• • Sex symbol surveyors David Bauer and Laura Capitano began by taking "stock of the bodies and souls that have seduced our imaginations over the years."
• • Bauer and Capitano wrote: Fads and fashions have always played roles in determining sex symbols. While physical attractiveness is about the only timeless quality, remnants of the categories from the early part of the 20th century are with us today. Instead of fading away and being replaced by a new genre, many of them continued and new ones were added, so many of today's sex symbols are amalgamations of one or more of the categories from the past.

• • Little did the advertising people behind Jean Harlow's 1933 film Bombshell know their words would be ageless when they called her the "blond bombshell of filmdom."
