Mae West: Muroc Dry Lake

MAE WEST worked with music director George Stoll at Paramount Films.  Here is the second half.
• • Mae West In Speed Feud with Georgie Stoll [Part 2 of 2] • •
• • By Henry Sutherland, United Press Writer
• • The bet at Muroc Dry Lake was inspired by the super-charged Dusenberg • •
• • Henry Sutherland wrote: Mae West supported Havier's argument with a white-toothed grin and an offer of cash that says her car is faster.
• • Georgie Stoll, who recently alibied to the speed coppers that his hack doesn't drive well until it passes 45, reported that he can do 139 in second, and the race may be arranged any day now.
• • If and when the race is run, Mae West won't drive, and neither will Stoll, wheels to be turned over to professional racers or stunt men. Situation recalls the speed feud of Zeppo Marx and Gary Cooper a few years ago, which ended with a Cooper victory over the same course.

• • Note: Formerly known as Muroc Dry Lake, Rogers Dry Lake is an endorheic desert salt pan in the Mojave Desert of California's Antelope Valley. The lake derives its name from the Anglicization from the Spanish name, Rodriguez Dry Lake.  Its hard surface is the central part of Edwards Air Force Base.

• • It was on Monday, 20 December 1926 that the controversial tabloid Evening Graphic printed a publicity picture of Mae West onstage, costumed as Margy LaMont, actor Barry O'Neill sprawled out in a chair, under her. In her 1926 Broadway play, Mae wanted to depict a woman who has power over her men, a novel idea at the time for theatrical dramas.

• • Dolly Parton's dream of playing Mae West for ABC TV is finished.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: “While acting, I may dress vividly, but at other times I am usually attired in black.”
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • The N.Y. Times mentioned Mae West.
• • Jacey Fortin wrote: Rock Hudson did it with Mae West. They sang "Baby It's Cold Outside" for the 1958 Academy Awards in Los Angeles. Ray Charles did it with Betty Carter. Lady Gaga and Joseph Gordon-Levitt did it with a modern twist.
• • Jacey Fortin wrote: And somewhere along the line, the 74-year-old song “Baby, It's Cold Outside” became a holiday standard, in heavy radio rotation, playing overhead in department stores, and covered on Christmas albums.  . . .

• • The Mae West Blog was started fourteen years ago in July 2004. You are reading the 4109th blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
