Mae West: Snooty Socialite

Since MAE WEST’s hit play “Sex” was just produced at the Hudson Theatre in Los Angeles, and maybe you were not there, let’s read one review of the production, shall we? This is Part 3 of 3.
• • Mae West’s Hit Play “Sex” Reprises at the Hudson Mainstage • •
• • Corny by today’s standards, “Sex” has its charm • •
• • Marilyn Tower Oliver wrote: Although the play is corny by today’s standards, it does have its charm and provides an entertaining two hours’ distraction from today’s often grim news.
• • Marilyn Tower Oliver wrote: Andrea Hutchman captures Margie’s hard-boiled exterior and her underlying vulnerability. Davey Johnson who portrays her sidekick Rocky oozes a sleazy charm. Susan Edwards Martin, an actress with many stage and TV credits, is hilarious as the snooty socialite Clara Stanton. Wayne Wilderson, who portrays Wayne on HBO’s Veep is appropriately suave.
• • Marilyn Tower Oliver wrote:  Mae West lived by her wits, charm and somewhat naughty reputation. She was also a local celebrity. She spent many years in Hollywood living at The Ravenswood Apartments on Rossmore Avenue. Her philosophy of life is summed up when her character Margie says, “You’ll never be anything but what you are. You’re just what you are and that’s all you’re gonna be.”
• • Marilyn Tower Oliver wrote:  Mae West’s “Sex” runs through Sunday June 17th at the Hudson Theatre Main Stage, 6739 Santa Monica Blvd. Hollywood.
• • This was the third of three parts. We hope you enjoyed her review.

• • On Tuesday, 2 July 1935 • •
• • It was a long, hot summer wrestling with the Hays Office over the script for "Klondike Annie."  Mae West and Paramount got more bad news from the censors on Tuesday, 2 July 1935.
• • The Hays Office wrote: "We judge from your letter that during part of this picture, Miss West will be masquerading as an exponent of religion or a religious worker. ..."
• • Nope! Mae West never performed at Neir’s • •
• • Mae West never performed at Neir's — — nor did she ever set foot in this all-male bastion of sweaty factory laborers.
• • For decades, laborers went to bars to drink, relax, spit, smoke cigars, curse, discuss politics, and (most importantly) to get away from wives and women.
• • Learn more about Woodhaven, a factory hub during the brief time the West family resided there.

• • Overheard in Hollywood • •
• • In the early 1930s, when Mae West was vacationing at La Cinta, a posh resort favored by Paramount executives, she had an amazing experience with Amelia Earhart that she wrote about in her memoir Mae West on Sex, Health and ESP.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: “I'm still a bachelor girl and that's all there is to it. Who brought all this up in the first place?"
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • American Heritage mentioned Mae West.
• • When Mae West showed a trusted friend the manuscript of her 1970 autobiography, “Goodness Had Nothing to Do With It,” he complained that the book lacked any mention of her struggles, failures, and disappointments. She scoffed. "Her fans don't want Mae West to have problems and have to struggle," she declared in confident third person. "Mae West always triumphs."  . . .
