Mae West: Male Malefactors

MAE WEST’s plump, curvaceous body was a vital element in her comedy. Academics have emphasized that “excessive body is one of the qualities of female unruliness, suggesting that she is unwilling or unable to control her physical appetites.” Japanese film historian Mio Hatokai discusses how Hollywood publicists and fan zines responded to this “fatness” in 1933. This is Part 43 of a lengthy piece.

• • Mae West: Who is “The Hawk,” an agent investigating Gus? • •
• • Mio Hatokai wrote: Meanwhile, one of Gus’ rivals, Dan Flynn (David Landau), tells Lou that an agent named “The Hawk” is after Gus for his tracking business, and promises her protection once Gus Jordan is in jail.

• • Mio Hatokai wrote: Lady Lou then receives a visit from Serge, and when Rita finds out about their meeting, she pulls a knife on Lou. [Mae mavens already know the entire plot, yes?]

You’ll find her in practically every drug-store window on every four-corners of the country. No, of course, not in person! But the photos are pretty personable at that. The cause of it all is the Mae West perfume.

Now only a real square could take notes under such circumstances.
