Mae West: Realm of Sex

Starring Australian actress Melita Jurisic as the American icon MAE WEST, a new play “Arbus and West” is onstage in Melbourne until March 30th. Naturally, Mae would have stipulated that her name was placed first in the title. Let’s enjoy a spirited review by drama critic Cameron Woodhead. This is Part 3.
• • “Arbus and West mere mouthpieces for Sewell's 'ideas' play” • •
• • Diana Glenn portrays Diane Arbus • •
• • Cameron Woodhead wrote: As her antagonist and interlocutor, Diana Glenn portrays Diane Arbus as a luminous, elfin creature, possessed of an intense idealism and curiosity, with an aura of melancholy lurking subliminally in the background. (Diane Arbus took her own life in 1971.)
• • Cameron Woodhead wrote: Facing her reluctant subject, Glenn's photographer is charming, fearlessly honest, psychologically astute and as seductive in the realm of intellect as West was in the realm of sex.
• • Cameron Woodhead wrote: Wedged between them, Jennifer Vuletic plays Ruby (West's no-nonsense dresser, gofer and confidant) with a gruff intimacy and defensiveness on behalf of her friend which catalyses the dramatic polarity between artist and muse.
• • The play sometimes flounders • • . . .

SAYS TWO MADE 'SYNOPSIS' Too Dark in Theatre to Write Clearly, He Asserts — — Reveals He Acted 28 Years Ago.
• • Captain James J. Coy of Inspector Mulrooney's staff, who appeared Thursday in General Sessions, told Judge Amadeo Bertini and a jury why he had raided Mae West's play "Pleasure Man" in October 1928.  These true events are dramatized in the stage play “Courting Mae West.”

• • Mae West has two shows going nightly at the Chi Chi Starlite Room here. On Saturday, she’ll be even busier.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: "No slapping, grabbing, or pinching for me — — when I see a man slapping or pinching a woman I'm disgusted. So unnecessary."

• • The Daily Variety mentioned Mae West.
• • Though Mae West's contract calls for only two pictures yearly, Paramount bringing pressure to get star to make three under special financial arrangements. “I'm No Angel” washed up Saturday.
• • Mae West starts immediately writing another original, “It Ain't No Sin,” which Paramount hopes to have completed by first of year. Studio planning in these two pictures is to cash in on “She Done Him Wrong.”  …
