Mae West: Beverly Hills Bash

The VIP premiere of "Sextette" starring MAE WEST was at the Pacific Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, California at 8:30 pm on Thursday, 2 March 1978.
• • Immediately following the screening, at 10:00 pm, lucky people had a special invitation paving the way into a private late-night supper honoring the movie queen at the glamourous Beverly Hills Hilton on Wilshire Blvd at Santa Monica Boulevard. VIP valet parking vouchers were also offered to the California guests of honor who attended Mae's after-party.
• • Imagine how stupendous this event must have been at the International Ball Room on the night of March 2nd. Don't you wish you were there?

• • Two deaths on March 2nd • •
• • Two actors who were cast-mates with Mae West in "Go West Young Man" [1936] share the second day in March.
• • Born in Virginia, Randolph Scott [23 January 1898 — 2 March 1987] was a motion picture actor whose career spanned from 1928 to 1962. He played the part of meek and mild Bud Norton in this Paramount Pictures release — — based on a hit Broadway comedy "Personal Appearance" — — when he was 38 years old.
• • Randolph Scott died on Monday, 2 March 1987 in Beverly Hills, California. He was 89.
• • Born in Pittsburgh and raised in Nebraska, Lyle Talbot [8 February 1902 — 2 March 1996] began his movie career under contract to Warner Brothers in the early days of "the talkies" and went on to appear in more than 150 films, first as a young matinĂ©e idol and later as a character actor and star of assorted B movies. He was a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and later served on the board.
• • Lyle Talbot portrayed the amusing Irish Catholic politician Francis X. Harrigan who pursues blonde vixen Mavis Arden in "Go West Young Man" when he was 34 years old.
• • Lyle Talbot died at his home in San Francisco, California on Saturday, 2 March 1996. He was 94.
• • Tyler Brooke [6 June 1886 — 2 March 1943] • •
• • Tyler Brooke, a native New Yorker of French descent, appeared in one classic motion picture with Mae West.
• • Born on 6 June 1886, Tyler's real name was Victor Hugo de Biere. Tyler Brooke was cast in "Belle of the Nineties" [1934] as a comedian.
• • Thrice married, the five-foot-eight character actor was usually cast as a handsome society rake, a handlebar-mustached quartet singer, or musical hall comedian. He appeared in 92 films between 1915 — 1943.
• • Tyler Brooke committed suicide in Los Angeles on 2 March 1943. The 56-year-old actor turned to carbon monoxide poisoning for his final curtain call. So very sad.
• • On Sunday, 2 March 1913 in NYC • •
• • It was on Sunday, 2 March 1913 that Mae West began a one week booking at Hammerstein's Victoria in the theatre district on West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue.

• • Auctioned off in 2002 was a Bowery and East River National Bank check for Moral Producing Corporation, dated 2 March 1927, made out to Harold Spielberg for the sum of $500.00, signed in black ink by Mae West. Note that Mae West was signing in her capacity as (yes) President of the Moral Producing Corporation.
• • Dated for 2 March 1936 • •
• • Will Hays and Joseph Breen continued to exchange letters regarding disputes over "Klondike Annie" and Breen wrote again to Hays on 2 March 1936. This censorship file must weigh a ton.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: "I take it out in the open and laugh at it."

• • The Mae West Blog was started seven years ago in July 2004. You are reading the 2226th blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
