MAE WEST is back onscreen. This assessment of her first starrer, by Dennis Seuling, is Part 5 of 13 segments.
• • Mae West: Sexually liberated screen persona • •
• • Dennis Seuling wrote: And when an old woman refers to Lady Lou as a fine gal, a fine woman, West replies, “One of the finest women ever walked the streets.”
• • Dennis Seuling wrote: Because She Done Him Wrong was made prior to strict enforcement of the Hays Production Code, Mae West was free to project her freewheeling, sexually liberated screen persona. In her later films, her characters would never again be this open and uninhibited.
• • Dennis Seuling wrote: Featuring 1080p resolution, She Done Him Wrong is presented by Kino Lorber Studio Classics in the aspect ratio of 1.37:1. The picture quality is sharp and free of visual distractions such as dirt specks, scratches, or emulsion clouding.

• • The headline was "Mr. Mae West" when Time Magazine ran with this embarrassing exposure (in their issue dated for 19 July 1937) — — Last week in Superior Court in Los Angeles it was as obvious as Mae West's best curves that Mr. Mae West had taken her advice. Even her most devoted fans chortled when they read that her now-admitted hoofer husband's real name is not Wallace but Willities or Szatkus and that the Szatkus family always knew her as Mamie.

• • Overheard in Hollywood • •
• • Mae West was excited about doing a circus theme film, “I’m No Angel,” because she thought children would be interested in the circus animals and the “Big Top” atmosphere.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: “Women like a man with a past, but they prefer a man with a present.”
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • An article about an artist mentioned Mae West.
• • LeRoy Neiman said: I had the opportunity to paint Mae West. She could talk a blue streak, talk about herself or anything else. She told me she was pissed off because during the war they named a life jacket “the Mae West,” and she said, “If I ever get my hands on that guy . . .” She did not approve! But she was wonderful to draw. ...
• • Did Mae really say that to LeRoy? Hmmm, we have our doubts.

Wow!
• • By the Numbers • •
• • The Mae West Blog was started fifteen years ago in July 2004. You are reading the 4,780th blog
post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a
newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the
mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and
career of Mae West, herself an American original.
