Mae West: “Men in My Life”

In 1943, MAE WEST was working on a new stage play called “Men in My Life” with a collaborator. Mike Todd was so excited about this that he planned to mount it on Broadway.  Out of all the material Mae invested her time in, there remains so much that was unseen and unproduced, unfortunately.

• • Variety wrote: Mike Todd likes another play which Mae West has written with a collaborator, and is dropping 'Catherine Was Great' in favor of the new script, titled “Men in My Life.” Otherwise, his plans to star her on Broadway remain as is.

• • Variety wrote: This is the show which follows 'Mexican Hayride,'  the Cole Porter and Dorothy and Herbert Fields musical slated for the Imperial in N. Y. shortly after Jan. 1. Meantime,  Mike Todd's, first of the three productions for 1943-44, 'Waked Genius,' comes into the Plymouth Theatre in N. Y. on October 11 or October 18, depending on its rewrite, shifting to Baltimore for further break-in after its Boston opening last week.

• • Did Mae West add to “Personal Appearance” or subtract from it when she altered it into “Go West Young Man”?
• • All such questions are interesting to dispute over in connection with films that are derived from novels and plays.  ...
