Mae West: Sniffed, Wafted

Despite all you think you know about MAE WEST, there’s always something new. Did you know that Mae West appreciated how delicate her mother's smell was, for instance?
• • This intimate interview with Mae West was first seen in 2009. This is Part 21 of 29 parts.
• • From the Archive: A Candid (and Entertaining) Interview with Mae West • •
• • Mae West spoke about sex and then about her mother • •
• • Charlotte Chandler wrote:  Mae West spoke about her mother: “My mother always smelled so fresh and clean, like she’d just come out of a bath. I liked to smell her bars of soap. They were perfumed, but not too much. Everything my mother did was delicate. Her perfume just wafted.”
• • Charlotte Chandler wrote:  I asked about having a photograph with her, suggesting that Paul [Novak, Mae’s devoted companion] could take it.
• • Mae West said: “I never have my photo taken with a younger woman.” • •
• • Charlotte Chandler wrote:  “I wish I could accommodate you, dear, but I never have my photograph taken with a younger woman,” she said.
• • Charlotte Chandler wrote: At Mae’s age, the category of “younger woman” included almost every woman.
• • Mae West said:  “I like to see myself in a picture — — surrounded by men.“ • •  . . .
• • This long and fascinating interview will be continued tomorrow.

• • "A young Mae West" is the favorite slogan for any of these kiddies, but nobody seems to realize that it takes rare talent, as well as a rare figure, to make a Mae West. And to give these girls a real chance, every Hollywood picture must be a strip act.

  1. I got a kick out of Mae's comment about never having a photo taken beside a young woman. This is not true as any fan knows. I have seen a wonderful photo of Mae beside Dolly Dempsey, a teenage fan at the time, who later became a lifelong friend. Another fallacy perpetuated by Mae is that she didn't have female friends. Perhaps she felt that this added to her mystery.

  2. • • That is quite true, Mark.
    • • Here is young actress Quinn O'Hara, posing with Mae West and Paul Novak at Mae's beach house in Santa Monica in the 1970s.

  3. Yes, I agree. Mae would never have said that. What I did hear was that she was asked to be photographed next to a woman with blond hair and she refused on the grounds that Mae West never poses with another blond. LOL

  4. • • Walter, two celebrities, Mae West and Muhammad Ali, were famous for consistently going out of their way for their fans.
    • • I guess you know this story already: after Mae West was onstage in "Diamond Lil" (revived on Broadway 1949-1951), after her 3-hour melodrama, Mae would autograph every Playbill presented to her until there was no one else online. Only then would her limo drive away.
    • • But I do think candid photos were another matter; the lighting could be poor, etc.
    • • A star must guard her public image, yes?
