Mae West: Torchy Ballads

A cartoon once depicted MAE WEST yanking G.B. Shaw's beard. If only the two controversial writers could chat during Shaw Fest, which is presenting “Sex” in Canada. Now Toronto put Glenn Sumi in the aisle seat. This is Part 4 of 5 segments.
• • Shaw Festival review: Sex feels relevant, even after nearly 100 years • •
• • The use of dozens of suitcases • •
• • Glenn Sumi wrote: The use of dozens of suitcases as the play’s primary props brings to mind the transitory nature of these people’s lives. And by having four poles with height charts on them – as well as the repeated sound of an old-fashioned camera taking a mug shot – it reminds us of the fate that befell West and the play when she was convicted of “corrupting the morals of youth” and sentenced to 10 days in jail.
• • Glenn Sumi wrote: Watching Sex, you might be reminded of any number of Hollywood films, past and present — — from Preston Sturges’s The Palm Beach Story to Pretty Woman. Ryan deSouza’s musical direction includes novelty numbers (Allegra Fulton is involved in one whopper) and torchy ballads that feel dated yet universal.

• • Borrowing manner and voice of Mae West, Zasu Pitts and others, well trained monkeys enact an old fashioned melodrama in the approved new fashioned manner. The animals are admirably controlled, the dubbing adroitly done, and action is remarkably smooth considering the difficulties inherent in this type of production.
