Mae West: A-MAE-zingly Youthful


MAE WEST, so often described by critics and newspaper reporters, occasionally permitted a devoted fan to come up ‘n’ see her. Michael St. John visited the Brooklyn bombshell. Read about his encounter. This is Part 2.

• • Michael St. John wrote: I really believed, as did everyone else, that she wasn’t available to the press, but she surprised me. After our introduction, she invited me to her penthouse apartment on Rossmore in Hollywood, where we had an unforgettable time together.
• • Michael St. John wrote: When I arrived at Mae’s apartment, I was met by Mark [sic], her partner-bodyguard. He quickly announced that I had an hour with the legendary actress. When Mae finally made her grand entrance, she was dressed completely in white and looked amazingly youthful and unbelievably stunning.
• • Michael St. John wrote: “Well, Michael,” she purred, “you made it. Hope I didn’t keep ya’ waitin’ long.”

• • Mae West [1893 — 1980] • •
• • At age 87, Mae West, star of stage and screen, suffered a series of strokes which finally resulted in her death on Saturday, 22 November 1980 in Hollywood, California.
• • The actress took her final breaths quietly in her Hollywood apartment (Ravenswood). Private services [conducted by Dr. Lloyd Ogilvie and attended by about 100 close friends and family] were held in the Old North Church at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills.
• • Her eulogy, written by Kevin Thomas and delivered by producer Ross Hunter, concluded: “Mae West always said that no one was ever to feel sorry for her, and she would not want anyone to start now. Mae West figured that in one way or another she would live forever. And she probably will.”
• • Entombment was in the West family mausoleum at Cypress Hills Abbey in Brooklyn, New York.

• • A five million dollar company, backed by San Francisco capitalists, has been organized to produce pictures starring Mae West. The new company, incorporated at Sacramento (in 1938), will be known as "Mae West Empire Pictures, Inc.," and will produce four Mae West pictures a year. The first will be "Catherine the Great," for which Miss West has written her own scenario.
