Mae West: Vic Tanny

MAE WEST had an enduring admiration for the male physique in person and onscreen. When Bob Hope — — born in the month of May on 29 May 1903 — — asked the comedienne a question, she did not hesitate. But first we will remind our Mae-mavens about the once glorious muscle-bound Tanny brothers.
• • Handsome hunk Armand Tanny [1919 —2009 ], a former Muscle Beach mainstay, was a member of the Mae West Revue.
• • Born on 5 March 1919 in Rochester, New York, Armand was the younger brother of gym-fitness pioneer Vic Tanny [18 February 1912 — 11 June 1985] — — and began posing in Strength and Health Magazine at 14 years old.
• • Hollywood — — During rehearsals for "The Dean Martin Show," Bob Hope asked Mae West what was her favorite TV show. Miss West replied, "The Vic Tanny commercials, of course. ’’

• • It was on Tuesday, 9 April 1974 that young Janet Damita Jo Jackson [born in Indiana on Monday, 16 May 1966] stepped onstage dressed as Mae West. The little girl was making her public debut performance at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas with the better-known members of her singing family. The eight-year-old rehearsed with her brother Michael, who gave her tips about Mae West's persona and intonations.  Happy Birthday, Janet.

Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.

  1. I was pleasantly surprised to see your B-Day tribute to Janet Jackson. Evidently the Mae West persona appealed to African-American women. There was a "Sepia Mae West" in the 1930's. I saw Diana Ross in concert in Vancouver in 1983, and she used Mae's "When I'm good, I'm good, but when I'm bad I'm better" quote.
