Mae West: Skyroom

MAE WEST photographs, some inscribed her autograph, will be sold today in England on Tuesday, 28 August 2012. Auctioneer Reeman Dansie described Lot # 759 as "some Paramount pictures, some film stills, some signatures."  Also to be sold are rare pictures of Carole Lombard, Marlene Dietrich, Bing Crosby, Clark Gable, and other film stars.

• • Hazel Dawn [23 March 1891 — 28 August 1988] • •
• • In the summer of 1926, when she was starring in "Sex," Mae West performed at a charity benefit at New York's Polo Grounds and on the same bill was 35-year-old Hazel Dawn, a member of the original Ziegfeld Follies in 1907.
• • Born in Ogden, Utah, to a Mormon family, pretty Hazel Dawn was a stage, film, and TV actress.  A 14-year-old Adele Astaire, sister of Fred, watched "The Pink Lady" starring Hazel Dawn and became a lifelong fan along with actress Ruth Gordon.
• • Hazel Dawn died in Manhattan, at the home of her daughter, on Sunday, 28 August 1988. She was 97.

• • According to a news item in The Hollywood Reporter published on Monday, 28 August 1933, Alexander Hall and George Somnes were set to co-direct the Mae West motion picture  "Belle of the Nineties."  However, these men were later replaced by Leo McCarey.

• • Life Magazine's issue (dated 28 August 1939) included a half-page photo of Mae West.

• • Reno Evening Gazette wrote: The Mae West revue in the Hotel Mapes is sensational and is being acclaimed as the finest floor show ever to appear in the Skyroom.
• • Mae West in her premier night club tour presents a production that is noteworthy for talent, showmanship, and novelty. Along with her maid Beulah of movie star fame, Mr. America of 1954, her muscle men and the male choral and dancing group, the Mae West revue is being received as an extravaganza.  The entire show is a combination of fast paced action, laughs, song and dance,  It is a show that carries all of a theatrical reduction in acting, satire, music, lighting, and staging.
• • All in all the Mae West revue is a show that is playing to capacity audiences every performance.  It is a show that is being acclaimed as the finest on any night club stage. The lovely Mapes Skyroom is a Donn Arden production, which presents the finest in routines and precision dancing. Their costumes plus the unusual lighting effects and background music make the Skyroom presentation a show in itself.  
• • Eddie Fitzpatrick and his famous orchestra provide the finest in music for dancing and listening pleasure. There are three shows tonight at 8:30 PM, 11:30 PM, and 1:30 AM.
