Mae West: Talk about Sex

MAE WEST, so often described by critics and newspaper reporters, occasionally permitted a devoted fan to come up ‘n’ see her. Michael St. John visited the Brooklyn bombshell. Read about his encounter. This is Part 4.
• • Mae West Relates Sexual Times to “The Saint” • •
• • Mae asked me how old did I think she looked • •
• • Michael St. John wrote: I knew she was in her eighties; what was I supposed to say? I managed to say she looked like a woman in her forties. Well, she was horrified! She made it very clear that most people believed she still looks at least twenty-five.
• • Michael St. John wrote: My god, the woman is crazy, I thought. She looks fantastic but twenty-five!
• • Michael St. John wrote: When I asked Mae how she managed to look so young, she said with great pride: “I take an enema every single day of my life. After I leave the bathroom, you can go in and fry an egg.”
• • Handsome Cary Grant was a bust in bed • •
• • Michael St. John wrote: Quite early in the interview, I learned that Mae enjoyed talking about sex. She claimed that Cary Grant was a beautiful-looking man but was nothing to brag about in bed.
• • Cary Grant, said Mae, was like a piece of jewelry • • . . .

• • The New York Herald Tribune reported on the intense displeasure to white Washingtonians when Mae West brought her Harlem play "The Constant Sinner" to D.C. where the local D.A. was Leo K. Rover. Leo roared about the profanity and the dances performed by the black cast. The D.A., apparently, had been telling the media he would "arrest the entire company of fifty one if another performance were given," noted the Herald Tribune on Thursday, 26 November 1931. Racism reared its nasty head.
• • Overheard in Hollywood • •
• • Mae West and diamonds were almost synonymous even before the creation of her most memorable character: Diamond Lil. ''I hadn't started out to collect diamonds, '' she said, ''but somehow they piled up on me.''
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said:  “This is the greatest age for women. They no longer have to sit primly on a straight-backed chair with hands folded, waiting for some guy to come and make a pass at them."
• • Quote, Unquote • •

• • David Wagner wrote: Paramount Pictures bought the land in 1927, and early Westerns starring actors like Gary Cooper quickly made use of the studio's new "movie ranch." Bob Hope, Claudette Colbert, Mae West and the Marx Brothers were among the other stars who shot there. …
