Mae West: Oozes Sex

On Friday, 12 October 1973, an intriguing article was published about MAE WEST.  Celebrity interviewer Norma Lee Browning [24 November 1914 — 11 June 2001], who shared Mae's passion for spirits, psychics, and the occult, had several wonderful conversations with the movie queen during her stint as a Hollywood chronicler, 1966—1976. Let's enjoy it together.

• • “1 suppose it should be sub-titled ‘And How to Do It' to keep up with the times,” Mae West said with a wink, adding hopefully, “I think it’ll be out for the holidays.” 
• • Norma Lee Browning wrote:  Miss West is this lovely, lively, legendary lady  who still oozes sex even in her most formal fine rags and well-covered-up look. 
• • Norma Lee Browning wrote:  Mae West was wearing a white matelassé silk gown with silver embroidery on the bust, with a matching theater coat, and lots of jewels and rings on her fingers.
• • Norma Lee Browning added:  The last time I talked to Miss West was on the set of “Myra Breckinridge” — and we kept that mile-long string of starry-eyed boys waiting and fidgeting! (Sorry about that, kids!) while she sounded off about “Myra.”
• • “The entire motion picture was chopped up and a big waste of money, and I hate being censored. It cramps my style," said Mae with annoyance. "I think everyone should be allowed to see my movies."

• • On Monday, 10 October 1932 readers of The L.A. Times noticed this peculiar headline and sub-head: "Gem Missing — — Monkey Has It!  Mae West's Pet Chews on Diamond."

• • "Whee, he's got the diamond," screams Mae West.  "But don't get excited.  If he swallows it, I'll buy it."

• • Robert Fryer, producer of "Myra Breckinridge," called to tell me they definitely do have a picture. Cross my heart. He said he is very pleased with director Michael Sarne's first rough cut which he saw the other day. Mae West is now rehearsing her final two musical numbers, to be shot next week. Fryer said that one is "slow and sexy," and the other "wild," like Toni Jones. Written by veteran songwriter Sammy Fain and late composer-singer Otis Redding, these songs will replace the numbers written by John Phillips, which Miss West definitely did not like.  . . .
