Mae West: Odd Couple

It was Tuesday,  16 October 1973 when MAE WEST had her first co-starring role at a dinner party.  Norma Lee Browning gives us the details. This is Part 1 of 3 parts.

Or a more incredible fact that than these two great ladies, who have been around movieland for quite a while, never set eyes on each other personally until just the other night?
• • Norma Lee Browning wrote:  Miss Davis hosted a small, Intimate dinner party for Miss West at the home she is currently leasing in the Hollywood Hills, and it was love at first sight [the not without some trepidation on both sides].
• • Norma Lee Browning wrote:  It seems Bette Davis has been a secret fan of Mae West for all these umpteen years, and now that she s.in town for a while (for a Dean Martin roasting and a Universal and ABC suspense Movie of the Week, "Scream, Pretty Peggy"], she expressed a desire to meet La West-who is likewise a long- time admirer of La Davis.

• • It was ninety-five years ago this October — — when 25-year-old Mae West was cast in a show produced by Arthur Hammerstein: "Sometime." Her character was Mayme Dean.  Mae received top billing in the musical's review by The New York Times (published on Saturday, 5 October 1918).
• • This musical, which opened at the Shubert Theatre [225 West 44th Street, NYC] on 4 October 1918, closed in June 1919, after running for 283 performances.

• • The Beautiful Life:  Stan Musgrove, producer of the upcoming Mae West TV special, reports the Simmons Mattress company is about to sign on the dotted line as sponsor. The special will be titled "A Night With Mae West," to be filmed at Universal for Robert Wise Productions . Life Magazine, meanwhile, is doing its own Mae West special — — a photo layout by former child star Roddy McDowell. I guess it all goes to show life can be beautiful if you are over 30 — —and if you have Mae West's fountain-of-youth secret. . . .
