There are many insightful revelations into the formidable character of Miss West (convincingly portrayed by Yvonne Sayers). Mae West mounts her audacious defense and rebuttal to the police witnesses who have interpreted her plays as indecent, and she is shown dealing with censorship, her arrests, and her courtroom trials. Was MAE WEST in the rehearsal room yesterday on West 38th Street? 
• • The "Courting Mae West" cast had just run through a complex court scene set during April 1927 — — a trial that concluded when Judge George Donnellan entered and told Mae West that the jury found her guilty, that she is going to jail, and that on April 19th sentencing would be imposed.
• • Based on true events, this is an emotional scene, featuring Mae's German-born mother Matilda West reacting to the verdict by standing up and pleading with the judge not to jail her daughter again.
• • "Why do you make bad laws in this country that punish good people?" yells Matilda West before stumbling and falling. A melee begins as the reporters photograph and crowd around Mae West — — who is trying desperately to reach her mother. 
• • The cast had just paused for a food break and director Louis Lopardi was about to announce the time of the next rehearsal (which is tomorrow on Monday).
• • The windows in the rehearsal room are closed and covered with heavy paper and hidden behind heavy black curtains.
• • Suddenly, the thick black curtains moved — — and THREE empty CHAIRS and a TABLE moved in unison about 2 feet into the room.
• • The cast found this occurrence quite strange.

MAE WEST had a bosom buddy (along with a sometime lover and a devoted manager) in Jim Timony, the man responsible for making the second-string vaudevillian into a box-office sensation. In "Courting Mae West," Neal Sims will portray the Irish-American attorney and star-maker. The versatile Mr. Sims — — a man of a million accents and moods 
— — will also take the part of Mae's director Edward Elsner, newsdealer Isidore, and other roles. Additionally, he is the Assistant Director for the production.• • Neal Sims was born and bred in Jay Gatsby country. Trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, he took Shakespeare classes with Mrs. Ian Richardson.
• • His credits encompass both acting and directing achievements. When director Louis Lopardi was casting for the role of MAE WEST in "Courting Mae West," he was seeking a powerhouse of an actress with sex appeal and industrial strength charisma. He discovered his leading lady portraying Mae West in Sam Shepard's play "Mad Dog Blues." 
• • Born on September 25th, actress Yvonne Sayers was raised in Shreveport, Louisiana.
• • Surrounded by a family of fun-lovers who enjoyed entertaining, her passion for performing flowered at a young age.
• • During high school, Yvonne enrolled in a local acting school while immersing herself in ballroom dancing and modeling — — which led to several local gigs, one of which was working on the set of the movie “The Firm” filmed locally in Memphis, TN.
• • It was there that she approached Sydney Pollack for his advice as to whether she should move to New York or LA to be an actress, to which he replied, “If you really want to be an actress, you should move to New York.” Kismet! The decision was made.
• • After graduation, she headed to The Big Apple and enrolled in T. Schreiber Studio and studied under the acclaimed Mary Boyer, who later opened her own studio, MTB Studio, where Yvonne continued her studies under Mary.
• • Still pursuing an acting career, she also directed some off-off Broadway plays.
• • Her passion for cinema and acting in film, as well as the art of filmmaking, led her to film school where she wrote, directed, and produced several films and graduated with special recognition for her work as a Cinematographer. She then began working behind the scenes professionally as a Cinematographer as well as in Production on several independent films and TV serials such as “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” and “Ed.” While working on the set of “Law & Order: CI” she was advised by producer John L. Roman to focus solely on her acting career. He said, “While this is all great experience, you have to stop doing this kind of work and just start performing and acting as much as possible.” And that’s exactly what she did.
• • Currently, the five-foot-five stunner is exclusively focused on an acting career and to being the best actress she can.
• • Yvonne has appeared on TV in: “Chappelle’s Show,” CourtTV’s “Till Death Do Us Part,” “The Maury Show,” and has performed live all over New York at the American Globe Theatre, in the Samuel French Festival, the PIT, Village Playwrights, the Wings Theatre, and in several productions at the 45th Street Theatre as a proud member of the Michael Chekhov Theatre Co.

How many actresses would like to portray MAE WEST? When director Louis Lopardi placed the official casting call for the play "Courting Mae West" in Actors' Access, within 48 hours 690 responses had flooded his mailbox. 
• • Since "Courting Mae West" — — a serious-minded comedy based on true events during the Prohibition Era — — has a cast of seven, not every resume was intended for the "diamonds is my career" gal. Another actress will portray Beverly West and Texas Guinan, for instance.
• • But the largest number of replies, according to Mr. Lopardi, was for the role of Starr Faithfull [called Sara Starr in the play]. He received 270 headshots and cvs from actresses eager to play the fatal flapper. Starr's role calls for a very thin, stylish woman in her mid-twenties. As written, Sara Starr is a complex creature with a generous store of nervous discontent, harsh in her judgments of others, and quick to see individuals as defective because they are not enough like her. When John O'Hara wrote about the beautiful party girl, who met death at age 25, he renamed her Gloria Wandrous and made her the centerpiece of Butterfield 8.
• • As Mr. Lopardi heads for his first round of auditions on Friday and Saturday [April 25th — 26th, 2008] at The Producers Club in Manhattan, what will he look for in the next Mae West? "Her vitality was legendary," said the director. "And Mae West had industrial strength charisma."
• • What helps a stage director select the right individual? The first step is "typing-out by headshots plus experience," he explained, "and then short screening auditions."
• • What are some red flags? Showing up totally costumed for the role is a warning sign Mr. Lopardi is aware of. "An actress can suggest Mae West by wearing a boa — — but if she shows up decked out like Diamond Lil, I would be leery."

That unreliable source of information — — the celebrity tell-all — — has showed no signs of bookstore slowdown since Mae West penned her memoirs with the help of a ghostwriter [Stephen Longstreet] fifty years ago in 1958. 
• • Many celebrity memoirs over-exaggerate the rotten aspects of a childhood in order to flatter the achievements that follow it. However, Julie Andrews resisted this in Home A Memoir of My Early Years.
• • In her autobiography Goodness Had Nothing to Do with It, Mae West certainly revealed no household poverty nor unhappiness, no past traumas, no "slippery slopes" where she fell down on the upward climb to success, no struggles with alcoholism, no childhood sexual molestations, etc. And it was not a kiss and tell book either.
• • Mae West (who was totally disinclined to air dirty linen) used this as a reason: that her fans wanted to know that Mae West always triumphed, that people did not want to see her as unable to cope or besieged by demons. Her book covered up a lot of unpleasantness.
• • What did Mae West hide in her memoir and her media interviews?
• • She hid the fact that she was sexually molested when young by a relative and also by a teacher. She hid the fact that she had a love affair with a married man when she was 21. She hid the fact that she got lousy reviews for 25 years. She hid the fact that she was fired from several Broadway shows before April 1926 (when she wrote "Sex" and produced it with her mother's savings). She hid the fact that no one would hire her between 1923 — 1925. She hid the fact that she was a bigamist, etc. She hid a lot of warts.
• • In other words, Mae West refused to give herself "a wound."
• • The public prefers stars who have a WOUND: who have had demons to overcome, whose glamorous public image hides dark secrets, etc .
• • While Mae West, who died in 1980, has no fan clubs, and is all but forgotten, Marilyn Monroe [1926 — 1962], who did not write her own plays and scripts, and who struggled with pills and alcohol and depression all her life, who had many marital break-ups, etc., has fan clubs galore and a legion of fans around the globe.
• • Fans love stars who have been WOUNDED.
• • One of the key elements of "Courting Mae West" that Steve Rossi (and other people who knew Mae) commented on is that this play shows Mae West under siege and wounded, and it is quite poignant when you watch Mae struggle and resolve her problems.

The past is another country — — and MAE WEST was most comfortable there.
• • However, in her Broadway blockbuster "Diamond Lil" [1928] Mae's aim was not to resurrect the naughty nineties — — but to present that bygone decade's sins in shifty soft focus. The world of Diamond Lil, restrained by Victorian morality despite a certain cheeky daring, was a backwards glance to a time of innocence, picturesque entertainment, well-behaved wildness, corset-clad temptresses, The Police Gazette's seductions, and 5-cent beer.
• • Drama critic Stark Young [1881—1963] analyzed Mae's clever maneuvers in his article for The New Republic:
• • "Diamond Lil" is as daring in the end [as 1926's "Sex"], the same sexy morsels, embraces, interventions of the law with rank suspenses, frank speeches, underworld, and so on. But it is more covered, continuous, and studied than the other production, and the crowd of characters, the costuming and vaudevillistic intervals, pull the whole of this later play into a more familiar style, less crudely, and sheerly singular than "Sex" appeared to be [excerpt from The New Republic — 27 June 1928].
• • Louis Lopardi, who will direct "Courting Mae West: Sex, Censorship and Secrets" in July at the Algonquin Theatre, also feels enriched by the past. His own production — — The Purgatory Project, Part 2 — — reimagined the lives led by four famous historical figures: Sigmund Freud, Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Lee Harvey Oswald.
• • A history buff as well as a thespian, Lopardi especially enjoys plays with a classical echo, texts rooted to a mythic past. For instance, he found "Metamorphoses," a play based on the Greek poem Metamorphoses by Ovid, fascinating and he relished the modernized adaptation written by Mary Zimmerman a few years ago. Ovid works onstage because those depictions of yearning and confused desires are timeless, feels Lopardi.
• • Since he has frequently decanted Ovid's ancient songs, he noticed right away the mythic skin underneath "Courting Mae West" — — the Brooklyn bombshell's story reimagined as the metamorphosis of King Midas. How you get the golden touch is one of the subtle sub-plots here. As Mae's career goals recalibrate her box office appeal, she will earn her hard cold slice of success — — but at a cost.

The play follows the actress-author through her box office triumph in "Sex"; her arrests, imprisonment, and legal woes (1927—1930); and ends in Hollywood when the 39-year-old is filming "She Done Him Wrong" for Paramount Pictures in December 1932.
