Mae West: Mocking Sex

On Saturday, 18 October 1947, MAE WEST was interviewed by a London reporter.
• • "Mae West's visit gives lift to London's spirits" • •
• • "Wisecracks, diamonds — and those eyelashes enthrall her many admirers written by Bill Strutton of our London staff" • •
• • This is Part 5 of 9 segments.
• • When Mae West is accused of vulgarity • •
• • Bill Strutton wrote:   To talk with her is to get an entirely different impression and to realise that, despite the legend that follows her still, Mae West is a shrewd, intelligent actress who won fame by creating a burlesque character as unique and as legendary, though not as innocent, as Charlie Chaplin's.
• • Whenever she is accused of vulgarity, Mae replies with some indignation: "Can't people see that I make fun of vulgarity and of sex?  So many insist on getting me wrong."
• • Bill Strutton wrote: Early in her Hollywood career no less eminent a character than Sir Cedric Hardwicke supported her claim by stating that Mae West had put an end to Hollywood's era of vamps and fatal women by making the world laugh at them.
• • And once Mae had created her hard-boiled siren the public would not let her change.
• • Critics called it: "History with a Leer" • •   . . .

• • On Friday, 22 September 1911 • •
• • On Friday, 22 September 1911, 18-year-old Mae West was in the spotlight. On that date, "A La Broadway" had opened at the Folies-Bergere Theatre, New York, NY. This short-lived revue closed on 30 September 1911.
• • Overheard in Hollywood • •
• • Nelson Sardelli will be cast in the role of Mario in "Myra Breckinridge" but he claims he prefers night club work and a live audience.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said:  "I have to go to the safe deposit box and get the diamond stuff out, and that's a lot of trouble."
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • The Butterfly Club mentioned Mae West.
• • Good Girls go to heaven. Bad Girls go to Hollywood • •
• • A duo cabaret about the often glamorous, sometimes tumultuous, but never boring lives of iconic screen goddesses Rita Hayworth and Mae West.  ...
• • Note: This show, part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival, began on Monday, 18 September and it will run through Sunday, 24 September 2017. If you are Down Under, and you can see the show and want to share your stage review with our readers, please get in touch. Thank you.

• • By the Numbers • •
• • The Mae West Blog was started thirteen years ago in July 2004. You are reading the 3793rd blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
