Mae West: September 11th

New York City, Mae West's hometown (and mine), was a cauldron of smoke-fed fear and unimaginable horror on 11 September 2001.
• • Innocent people, gathering inside the World Trade Center for peaceful purposes and/ or work-related duties, were blasted by madmen in the sky. Lucky were those who managed to get out of the North Tower or the South Tower before these iconic skyscrapers collapsed in flames.
• • The United States was changed forever on that date and the days following.
• • Remember us in The Big Apple today, on September 11th, as New Yorkers come together to mourn the loved ones we lost.
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
• • God Bless America • •

• • "While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
• • Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free,
• • Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
• • As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer."

• • God Bless America,
• • Land that I love.
• • Stand beside her, and guide her
• • Thru the night with a light from above.
• • From the mountains, to the prairies,
• • To the oceans, white with foam
• • God bless America, My home sweet home.

Come up and see MAE in the mid-WEST in mid-September.
• • Not far from the Windy City is the sweet suburb called Plainfield.

Mae West: Riviera Reversal

Think of it. Invited luminaries included MAE WEST, Gary Cooper, and Douglas Fairbanks.
• • Fifty thousand posters were printed.
• • A date was chosen for the opening: 1 September 1939.
• • On the eve of May's annual celebration of cinema at the Cannes Film Festival, Nigel Andrews reflects on what he calls "the worst-timed birth in modern cultural history." Writing for London's Financial Times, Nigel Andrews notes that a humble little fishing port on the Cote d’Azur had aspired to become a twin of Tinseltown by hosting an international film festival.
• • He writes: "Fifty thousand posters were printed. The invited luminaries included Mae West, Gary Cooper, and Douglas Fairbanks. The Hunchback of Notre Dame, starring Charles Laughton – what better symbol of Franco-Anglo-American entente? – would open the event. Then Hitler invaded Poland. On that first day. The festival was cancelled. . . ."
