MAE WEST's portrait will be exhibited and offered for sale in the southwest this weekend — — along with eleven other notable faces, all with a Roaring Twenties vibe.
• • After a chance meeting between a tavern owner and a neighborhood portraitist, a local saloon in New Mexico got a Hollywood makeover. Tijeras native Michael Ostaski, whose airbrush art has been commissioned by several local businesses, decided to paint Prohibition Era-inspired murals inside Fat Sat's Bar and Grill in Belen. The colorful works drew so much media coverage and many compliments from tipplers that on 14 August 2010 he will unveil a dozen new canvases created to continue the theme.
• • New Mexico reporter Kristina Medley writes: "The 1920s will come back to life on Saturday, August 14, when a New Mexico native and internationally-known artist showcases some of his work at Fat Sat's Bar and Grill in Belen. ..."
• • Kristina Medley adds: "Michael Ostaski decided to model other pieces after the mural he did of [Robert] De Niro and has created 12 black and white airbrush paintings of famous people from the era — — including Mae West, W.C. Fields, Marlene Deitrich, Edward G. Robinson, and others. The pieces fit the theme of Fat Sat's perfectly and will be featured at the restaurant until they are sold, he said. ..."

The charm of yesterday, the convenience of tomorrow is the slogan for the El Rancho where MAE WEST bedded down with the sandman.
• • Columnist Amy Graff writes: Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn stayed here during production of The Sea of Grass; Burt Lancaster and Lee Remick were guests when they made The Hallelujah Trail. The list of Hollywood stars who bedded down at the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup, N.M., goes on and on: MAE WEST, Gene Autry, Jack Benny, Humphrey Bogart, Kirk Douglas, Henry Fonda, Ronald Reagan, James Stewart, John Wayne, Burt Lancaster, and many others.
• • Columnist Amy Graff writes: Built in 1937 by R. E. "Griff" Griffith, brother of movie mogul D. W. Griffith, the El Rancho's rustic charm was attractive to the movie makers and stars filming in the surrounding red rock canyons. Their autographed photos line the walls of the spectacular two-story lobby with dark wood beams, Navajo rugs, mounted trophy heads, a circular staircase, and an enormous stone fireplace.

Old-time newspaper men didn't live by the almighty press release when they wanted an interview with MAE WEST.
• • Ollie Reed, Jr. tells the story of veteran reporter George Baldwin, a Texas native, who started at The Albuquerque Tribune late in 1934 and worked at the paper — as reporter, city editor, managing editor, associate editor, and columnist — for more than 60 years. He died in 1997 at age 88.
• • In his first years at the paper, George Baldwin worked news beats all day, stopped at home for supper cooked by his wife, Ruth, and then covered University of New Mexico sports well into the evening. He didn't back off that work schedule until illness overtook him in his mid-1980s.
• • "He was at the paper at 6 in the morning and 6 in the evening," remembered Harry Moskos, who started at The Tribune in 1953. "I think that's where I got my work ethic."
• • George Baldwin began his days with breakfast at the Court Cafe, which was on Fourth Street, just north of Central Avenue. Then he walked to the old Alvarado Hotel near the Santa Fe Railway tracks to see if any movie stars or other notables were stopping in town on the trains that ran between Los Angeles and Chicago.
• • Once, in the late 1930s, he got a tip that movie star Mae West was on a train. Baldwin got on to look for her, and the train departed with him still aboard.
• • "Boy, that conductor was sore," Baldwin recalled in a 1996 interview. "You weren't supposed to stop a train in those days. They finally did stop it up by Menaul School and made me get off. I had to walk (about 2 1/2 miles) back to The Tribune offices." ...

MAE WEST — — who often toured — — slept in almost every state, and tourists continue to find her footsteps from coast to coast. One Englishman was delighted to discover Mae had touched down in New Mexico.
• • "Route 66," rhapsodizes the British journalist Owen Adams [in the UK's Sunday Mirror on 30 December 2007], "just like the song says, winds from Chicago to LA, more than 2,000 miles all the way. And you can still find classic rock ’n’ roll blasting from Wurlitzer jukeboxes in neon-lit diners, drive-ins and roadhouses."
• • Shortly after reaching Route 66’s mid-point, his tour bus crossed from Texas to New Mexico — — and encountered a double dose of WEST.
• • According to Owen Adams, "Soon we reached Gallup, location for countless old Western movies. The Hotel El Rancho is where everyone from MAE WEST and Doris Day to Errol Flynn and Burt Lancaster stayed, and it has been lovingly restored with signed photographs of the stars lining the walls. The Cosmos tour makes an irresistible diversion from the old Route 66 to take in the Grand Canyon in Arizona — — just as spectacular as it appears in all the photographs and films. ..."
