MAE WEST was cast as La Petite Daffy in the hit musical "A Winsome Widow" — — which was onstage from April — September of 1912 at the Moulin Rouge. One of her notorious cast mates now steps into the spotlight on her birthdate.
• • A native of Budapest, Hungary, Yansci Deutsch [stage name Jennie Dolly] was a twin and half of "The Dolly Sisters" stage act. Born in the month of October — — on 25 October 1892 — — Jennie wound up in the same Broadway production as Mae.
• • The private life of Rozsika Dolly and her twin turned out to be tabloid fodder. They shared lovers, won a fortune gambling, and bought extraordinary diamonds and pearl adornments, all of which made gawky headlines.
• • This frisky lifestyle turned sad in 1933. Jennie was involved in a serious car crash near Bordeaux, France with her former lover Max Constant. It took six weeks and fifteen painful surgeries and the sale of most her jewelry to restore her to some semblance of her former beauty. Ultimately, she felt she was "a broken shell" even though she made her second trip to the altar with Bernard Vinissky (marriage in 1935; divorce in 1940).
• • Lovely Jennie Dolly took her own life in June 1941. She committed suicide by hanging herself in the shower of her apartment in the Shelton Hotel in Hollywood, California. Yikes.

Now being sold, the paintings of an expelled congressman are all earmarked with his tribute to MAE WEST. 
• • As shown on his Betty Boop canvas, the capital "M" in the moon on each of Jim Traficant's work is a striking tribute to the Brooklyn blonde.
• • Everybody in the whole cell block/ Was dancin' to the jailhouse rock ... • •
• • The convicted felon, freed after a 7-year stint in prison, also admires (and has sketched) Elvis. In Ohio, his welcome home booze-and-shmooze fest featured Elvis Presley impersonators. What an opportunity for a deejay to play "Jailhouse Rock"!
• • Born in Youngstown, Ohio on 8 May 1941, James Traficant, Jr. became an amateur artist as a way to pass time during his incarceration. The disgraced politician was once a Democratic Representative in the United States Congress from Ohio during 1985 to 2002. In 2002, however, Traficant was convicted on 10 felony charges — — bribery, racketeering, tax evasion, forcing his aides to perform chores at his Ohio farm and on his houseboat, and obstruction of justice — — lawlessness brought about by his demanding kickbacks from his staff and "forgetting" about paying taxes, among other criminal arrogance. Ousted from the House in a vote of 420 to one, Traficant was sent to the Big House, his devil tail between his legs.
• • A number of inmates have been moved to charitable acts. Mae West, for instance, funded a library for female prisoners confined to the Women's Workhouse in 1927.
• • Jim Traficant promised to auction off a few paintings to benefit retirees from his district whose company went bankrupt earlier this year. Thus proceeds from the paintings will benefit the Delphi Salaried Retiree Association, a group of autoworkers who are afraid of losing their pensions after the company turned the pensions over to the government's pension insurer. (The group filed suit against the insurer.)
• • Throughout his prison term, the enterprising lawbreaker sold his drawings online as well as through sympathetic Ohio galleries.

MAE WEST will return to the Pittsburgh area tomorrow night in a rollicking nostalgia-rich stars and stripes production set during wartime.
• • "A USO Tribute Variety Show" will focus on the heyday of Bob Hope's tours, the World War II years of the 1940s. There are some GIs who still can remember when Bob Hope ventured out to the war zones taking with him a constellation of Broadway's best and Hollywood's biggest names.
• • Bob Hope would be accompanied by high-profile stars such as Mae West, Judy Garland, the Andrews Sisters, Bing Crosby, Rita Hayworth, the Marx Brothers, the Three Stooges, Shirley Temple, Jack Benny, and more.
• • All these famous entertainers (and many others) will come to life again through the 50-member — — the largest ever for ACT — — cast.
• • "A USO Tribute Variety Show" was written and organized by producer Paul Wright of North Buffalo and co-directors Cortney Bavera of Worthington and Laura Lloyd of Washington Township.

Character actor Adrian Morris played a minor role in a MAE WEST motion picture "Every Day's a Holiday" [1937].
• • Born in Mount Vernon, NY in the month of January — — on 12 January 1903? (1907?) — — Adrian Michael Morris was the younger son of the prominent Broadway actors William Morris and Etta Hawkins. Adrian was the younger brother of stage and film star Chester Morris.
• • In 1931, he made his (uncredited) screen debut in "Arizona" and his parts were usually the minor supporting roles: a policeman, a gangster, etc.
• • He played a henchman in "Every Day's a Holiday."
• • The other colorful characters he played included the chatty carpetbagger — — who promised a gathering of freed slaves that they'd each receive "40 acres and a mule" — — in "Gone With the Wind" [1939]. He was memorable as the heartless hiring agent who delivers impossible ultimatums to the transient "Okies" in "The Grapes of Wrath" [1940].
• • In the space of a decade, Adrian Michael Morris appeared in over seventy features — — often unbilled or sometimes billed as Michael Morris.

MAE WEST, who avoided discussing death or illness, might have been horrified to learn that a death cab was shuttling her back and forth to a Cleveland theatre. In 1941, however, when Mae was booked for a week at the Palace Theatre, her chauffeur was the local funeral home director.
• • Born in 1914, Howard W. Edwards had proudly displayed in his home a photo of himself with Mae West. He often retold the tale of driving the brassy blonde from the Statler Hotel to Mass every morning — — and on to the Palace during her weeklong engagement. Edwards was hired to drive the limousine that was leased from Cleveland Memorial Temple Funeral Home, where he worked, according to an article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer [3 October 2007].
• • Plain Dealer Reporter Maggi Martin wrote: "At 14, Edwards decided on a funeral career when he worked as a professional pallbearer in New York City [in 1928] as an apprentice at Walter B. Cook Inc., the busiest funeral parlor in the city. He earned 50 cents for carrying the casket out of the home and another 50 cents for carrying it into church."
• • A native Clevelander, Howard W. Edwards became a licensed Ohio funeral director in 1936. He owned Edwards Funeral Home in East Cleveland for nearly 40 years.
• • After he died on 28 September 2007 at age 93, his friends told the media that none of his passengers had left the lasting impression that Mae West did.
