Mae West: Purists Left

Malcolm H. Oettinger profiled MAE WEST for Screenland. Since this interview has rarely been seen, let us enjoy it together. This is part 7 of 13.
• • “Going West” • •
• • Mae West: Her movie was phenomenally successful, "She Done Him Wrong" • •
• • Malcolm H. Oettinger wrote: Her success hither, thither, and yon was universal.
• • Malcolm H. Oettinger wrote: At this point, Hollywood began to think of celebrating.

• • Malcolm H. Oettinger wrote: After several conferences and caucuses she was signed by Paramount.
• • Malcolm H. Oettinger wrote: A trial spin in "Night After Night" was quickly followed by the phenomenally successful "She Done Him Wrong" which represents what the purists have left of "Diamond Lil.”
• • Note: Written as an 1890s melodrama, “Diamond Lil” was a three-hour stage play about sex trafficking on the Bowery. If a full 18 minutes of Mae’s earthy original survived in the tidy 66-minute screen version by Paramount, that would surprise me.

• • Note: All those "white slavery" scenes, the females stowed in cages and hidden away in Charlie Fong's basement, certainly must have been deleted first. An explicit sex scene between Juarez and Diamond Lil, who borrowed Frances' apartment on Elizabeth Street to make love, was scrapped.
• • Mae West: She sees the funny side of sex • • …

• • On Thursday, 3 May 1934, the headline "Mae West Scouts Talk of Rift" appeared in The Los Angeles Times. The article quotes Mae West's denial of a rift between herself and Jim Timony. The actress emphasized that they were not sweethearts, but he's still her business manager.
• • Overheard in Hollywood • •
• • There is the threat here that the appearance of Mae West on the screens of some theatres today will result in lasting damage. This is a problem to be analyzed by the individual exhibitor before he books a Mae West picture. Paramount must lend a reasonable ear on this subject.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: "I'm for clean pictures and clean everything."
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • Film Bulletin mentioned Mae West.
• • Mae West will make a personal appearance at the RKO Boston Theatre beginning on April 28th.
• • 'Tis said the contract was made by Charles Koerner over a year ago. …

Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
