Mae West: Damaged Career

Jill Watts, biographer of MAE WEST, distinguished professor at CSUSM, and talented author of books on Father Divine [1879—1965] and Hattie McDaniel [1895—1952], which has inspired a bio-pic about the Oscar winner, has kindly consented to an exclusive interview with The Mae West Blog. This is Part 14.
• • Mae West and the Criminal Underworld • •
• • JILL WATTS: Additionally, some of these relationships were with figures, like Madden, who cultivated strict privacy because of his underworld activities.  Additionally, she had relationships with African American men.  Interracial relationships at the time were highly forbidden and it not only would have hurt her career but endangered her black lovers.
• • MW BLOG: QUESTION #5:  Mae West did not have any female proteges nor was she ever photographed with a female identified as “a close friend” (though she did seem to trust Dolly Dempsey). She did express disdain for lesbians.  Was she that insecure to the end, did she hate women, were all women perceived as “competitors,” or was it something else in your opinion?
• • JILL WATTS: ANSWER #5:  This is an interesting question because, in part, Mae is currently being increasingly recognized as an early LBGT ally.  I think there is no doubt that she was very comfortable with gay men and was interested in respecting their choices and elevating their lives.

• • Mae West never performed at Neir's — — nor did she ever set foot in this all-male bastion of sweaty factory laborers.
• • For decades, laborers went to bars to drink, relax, spit, smoke cigars, curse, discuss politics, and (most importantly) to get away from wives and women.

• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said:  “They were most courteous; they didn't want anything to happen to me before I got to Welfare Island [i.e., The Women's Workhouse], I guess. I was ushered into a waiting-room. There was a colored woman, with a gold badge, in charge.”

• • Thank you for reading, sending questions, and posting comments during these past fourteen years. Not long ago, we entertained 3,497 visitors. And we reached a milestone recently when we completed 4,000 blog posts. Wow!
• • By the Numbers • •
• • The Mae West Blog was started fourteen years ago in July 2004. You are reading the 4027th blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
