Mae West: Harold Entwistle

MAE WEST starred in "She Done Him Wrong" [1933] and Harold Entwistle had a minor role.  When he had the opportunity to work with Mae again in "Goin' to Town" [1935], he was seen as Fletcher Colton's butler.
• • Harold Entwistle [5 September 1865 — 1 April 1944] • •
• • Born in London, England on Tuesday, 5 September 1865, Charles Harold Entwistle launched his entertainment career as a stage actor.  He was 49 years old when American audiences made his acquaintance in silent films; he was often cast in  authority roles as a colonel, major, lord, judge, and uncle.
• • By 1932, when he was 67, he was frequently used as the butler or an aging aristocrat as well as those typical bits for senior character actors: auctioneer. clerk, elevator operator, beadle, conductor, tailor, dustman, and dyspeptic.  From 1914 — 1941, he took part in 49 motion pictures.
• • Harold Entwistle died in Hollywood on 1 April 1944.  He was 78.
• • Darryl Francis Zanuck [5 September 1902 — 22 December 1979] • •
• • Born in Nebraska on Friday, 5 September 1902, Darryl Francis Zanuck started out as an actor. He transitioned into a producer, director, writer, and movie studio executive who played a major part in the Hollywood studio system.
• • Eventually, Darryl F. Zanuck did work with Mae when he produced "Myra Breckinridge" in 1970.
• • During his tenure in Tinseltown, Zanuck earned three Academy Awards. In his later years, he suffered with jaw cancer and died in Palm Springs, California on 22 December 1979.  He was 77.

• • On Friday, 5 September 1952 in Denver, Adlai Stevenson gave a speech that included a piece of wisdom — — "it is not the years in your life, but the life in your years" — — and this statement has been misattributed to both Abraham Lincoln and Mae West.
• • 72 Birthday Candles Lit for Raquel Welch • •
• • Happy Birthday to Raquel Welch, whose career was not boosted by "Myra Breckinridge" [1970], though her curves made the poster memorable. Born on Thursday, 5 September 1940, the former model is 72 years old today. When they co-starred together, Mae West was 77 years old. You think about it, honey.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: "I’ve developed a different way of selling my sex. I laugh them into it. I cover it with comedy. If you laugh with a sinner, you like her. You grow fond of her, feel sympathy for her.  There are some people who can get away with anything yet always come out on top. The worse they are the better you like them. They happen to have something different that wins you no matter what they do.  ..."

• • The Mae West Blog maintains its conviction that Raquel what's-her-name has components made of rubber.  She sure bounced out of Tinseltown faster than a Spaldeen.
• • Variety reports that Faye Dunaway will play Mae West in the upcoming film The Calling. Although West is considered an icon of outspoken sexual expression, her own sexuality remains a subject of conjecture — — in recent interviews, Mae West's "Myra Breckinridge" costar Raquel Welch maintains her conviction that West was really a man. ...

• • The Mae West Blog was started eight years ago in July 2004. You are reading the 2417th blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
