Mae West: Constant Sinning

MAE WEST used to say: "The score never interested me — — only the game." And it's clear the Brooklyn blonde was never into "score settling" either. The Empress of Sex would never have kept a phone message nor a billet-doux from a lover for the express purpose of airing this private communication in the news media.
• • Perhaps her fascination with athletes also kept alive Mae's sense of fair play. Having a father who was a boxer may have taught "Baby Mae" that an athlete is a man who has stolen glory from the gods and hidden it in his insides until he's ready to flash ahead in his sport.
• • In Mae's novel The Constant Sinner, her main character Babe Gordon steadily pursues muscular rebels, also crossing the color line — — the Grand Canyon of sexual transgressions in this country.

• • David Rosen writes: Over the last century, a second type of scandal has shadowed the sports scene. This involves popular female entertainers and their affairs with male athletes. This phenomenon is exemplified by the affairs of Madonna and Mae West. Madonna’s affairs with Alex Rodriguez and Dennis Rodman mirror West’s affairs of more than a half-century ago. Mae West was notorious for having sex with boxers on the night they fought. Among her apparent conquests were heavyweight champions James J. Corbett and Jack Dempsey. . . .
