Mae West: Donna Steele

Up until Sunday 8 March 2009, theatre-buffs in Scotland can enjoy Donna Steele's sultry and spirited portrayal of MAE WEST.
• • "Donna Steele does a fine job as the unlucky spouses and delivers a smoldering Mae West," declares drama critic Jonathan Trew in the United Kingdom publication The Daily Record. Jonathan Trew adds, "Nostalgic but not sentimental and stuffed with old time Broadway showstoppers, 'Jolson and Company' is 'Mamma Mia!' for the older generation."
• • In the title role is Allan Stewart, who does not black up. With plenty of energy and sizzling songs, this musical bio follows Al Jolson's career from when he first landed in the United States. The storyline follows his work on The Great White Way — — where his colleagues and co-stars included Mae West and Texas Guinan — — up until his reign in Hollywood.
• • "Jolson and Company: The Musical" will be at King's Theatre, Edinburgh, Scotland only through today, gentle reader. Then in May, this play will transfer to Dundee Rep.
