Mae West: No April Fooling

MAE WEST was in rehearsal for her role as Margie LaMont, a Canadian vixen with no time for the Royal Canadian Mounties - - and an interest in the British navy. During April 1926, Mae was preparing for the out-of-town try-outs and then a well-publicized Broadway premiere on 26 April 1926 at Daly's 63rd Street Theatre. Written by Mae West under the penname Jane Mast, "Sex" sold out on opening night, and did respectably at the box office for the next ten and a half months despite bad-mouthing from all the drama critics in Manhattan.
