Mae West: Eleventh

One native New Yorker was MAE WEST — — and she would have been horrified by the attack on the Twin Towers on Tuesday, 11 September 2001.
• • Eleventh Anniversary • •
• • Today is the eleventh anniversary of this day of infamy and New York City is in mourning. Keep us in your prayers.
• • On Monday, 11 September 1933 • •
• • It was on Monday, 11 September 1933 that Mae West wrote an enthusiastic letter of encouragement to certain American theatres to help promote her new star-turn "I'm No Angel."
• • This letter was mailed to the Manager, Affiliated Theatres, Mavins Theatre, Reseve, Louisiana.
• • Wrote Mae: "There never was any kind of dame, anywhere, that worried more about her figure than a showman does about his! I mean the one he reads and either weeps or sings about at the end of the week. . . ."
• • "I'm No Angel" grossed $2.2 million.
• • On Thursday, 11 September 1947 • •
• • Mae West and Jim Timony sailed to England aboard the RMS Queen Mary and arrived at Southampton on Thursday, 11 September 1947.
• • The newspapers noted that Mae had developed a liking for scones and clotted cream, which she enjoyed with her afternoon tea.  The actress told one reporter that British cuisine had made her gain 6 lbs.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: "I ain't had time to have a personal life. I see my manager and my brother and my maid and my chauffeur.  The studio calls up early in the mornin' and late at night to see how I'm comin' with my story.  I'm like a machine."
• • Mae West said:  "Well, they were wonderful there, in London . . . England. But the men were a little reserved . . . and I'm not."
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • An article in The Guardian recalled a sighting of Mae West.
• • The Guardian's London correspondent wrote: All too briefly yesterday the grey gloom of Euston station was lifted by the presence of a radiant personage with strikingly blonde hair and a dazzling smile. Miss Mae West was on her way to Manchester for the opening to-morrow of her play "Diamond Lil." A quarter of an hour before her train was due to leave, Miss West swayed, the tophatted station-master at her side, along the platform to her compartment. Her arrival was the signal for crowds to desert the train and clamour for autographs. It seemed that the actress must have signed almost a hundred small photographs displaying to advantage her well-known features before she took a rest.
• • Then, in the voice Hollywood has made famous, she invited her audience to "Come around and see me in Manchester."  ...

Mae West: Colonic Tonic

MAE WEST Kept a Clean House — — shrieked today's news headlines. Apartment Therapy's staff leads off with a zinger (and a quirky style of capitalization not endorsed by The Chicago Manual of Style): "Eleven Days into The Great Spring Cleanse on Social Workout, and we've discovered that both Mae West and Princess Diana were into colonic irrigation. ..." All right, that's quite enough of that. The next topic has to do with gas.
• • 1928 Mae West Visible Gas Pump • •
• • All is not well in Southern Colorado where pump pilfering perplexes the Pueblo Police this week. Recently, crime reporter Nick Bonham warned his readers: "A 1928 Mae West Visible Gas Pump was stolen from Colorado Performance, according to Cpl. Edward Vasquez. The pump is valued at $2,500 and had been bolted and welded to the ground. ..."
• • 13 April 1934 • •
• • It was on 13 April 1934 that Mae West appeared on the cover of Film Weekly in the United Kingdom. The smaller photo is from "I'm No Angel" [lower right]. Jolly good show.

• • Connecticut arts reviewer Karen Dydzuhn writes: In response to questions posed by Executive Director Jerry Goehring, Debbie Reynolds proved her range of talent by interspersing impersonations of legendary performers Mae West, Bette Davis, Marlene Dietrich, and Katharine Hepburn with often comedic anecdotes detailing both her personal and professional lives. ...

Mae West: Fashion Icon

"MAE WEST in the fashion pages?" you ask — — and why not?
• • What designers desire most is to enter the high blue door of interpretation. It's merely cut cloth that sewing machines piece together, after all. To give fashion context, there must be retrospectives, muses, icons, and that happy tag-along element: flair.
• • Last month, British tabloids ran photographs of Kate Moss as she was busy purchasing a £12 T-shirt from the Camden branch of Snappy Snaps. A reporter noted that Kate Moss chose one featuring a print of Mae West — — with the logo "Mae the spirit be with you!" written across the front.
• • Buttocks clenched, the UK Style Desk went into overdrive, shrieking: She's always had an eye for a trend, but even Kate Moss's most devoted fans may be surprised by the supermodel's latest fashion foray. For eschewing her usual haute couture haunts last week, Moss was to be seen shopping at budget camera shop Snappy Snaps, hardly known for its stylish credentials. Dressed down and hiding behind a pair of Prada sunglasses, she was spotted in the store's Camden branch buying a £12 T-shirt from its Demented Divas range, which includes images of Mae West, Cher, Shirley Bassey, and Madonna.
• • About her a-MAE-zing T-selection, designer Al Pillay exclaimed: 'I'm thrilled that Kate Moss has one. They've become very sought-after images. Amy Winehouse has one [from UK's The Daily Mail, 27 April 2009, page 35]." Soon all the capons will be sporting them (once they discover the coke-heads are snapping 'em up)! If you see the shirt being worn in your area, especially by any bow-legged jezebels, do phone in.
• • Al Pillay originally did these amusing sketches for his personal greeting card line. What do you think of his version of Mae West?
• • Also in the United Kingdom, the trendy femme brand Hellz Bellz channelled Mae for their Christmas Holiday catalogue last year — — Hellz 2008 Holiday ‘Born Bad’ Collection. Toasting the Brooklyn bombshell, and what she meant to them, the designers called the line "Born Bad." Their press release explained: “Our Holiday 2008 collection represents for the “Born Bad” femme fatale. With Mae West’s racy quotes which sprang, tough-dame style from the side of her mouth, she’s been firmly stamped as the personification of Hellz through her story of survival, persistence, independence, and unshakable self-esteem. In her life which ended in 1980, at the age of 87, she became both an icon and pioneer for both men and women everywhere.”
• • Two fashion tributes to the Empress of Sex, a durable diva, from King Arthur's country. Right-oh!
