Mae West: Becoming Burma

MAE WEST pops up in all sorts of places where muscular mates congregate — — including IDW’s new series of reprints of "Terry and the Pirates."
• • One of the giants of the American newspaper comic strip was an Ohio native Milton Caniff [28 February 1907 — 3 May 1988]. In 1934, Caniff came up with a feisty adventure strip "Terry and the Pirates," writing and illustrating it through 1946. He also created "Steve Canyon."
• •
Commemorating the centennial of Caniff’s 1907 birth, Fantagraphics Books has just published a bio bigger than a tombstone. Weighing in at 952 pages, "Meanwhile...: A Biography of Milton Caniff" was written with Caniff's cooperation by Robert C. Harvey, a comic strip scholar.
• • A gifted storyteller, Caniff suggested the title "Meanwhile" [a standard caption in continuity comic strips]. It is undeniable that his muscular chiaroscuro style of inking brought an intensely masculine vibe and a dramatic atmosphere to his illustrated pulp fiction. Aware that a few good men deserve a few femme fatales to stir the plot, Caniff injected a refreshing new sensuality to the funny papers during the Depression with temptresses such as the Dragon Lady and Burma, a cigarette-smoking vixen modeled on MAE WEST and introduced in early 1936.
• • Burma, the Dragon Lady, and Terry's gang live on through IDW’s new series of reprints of "Terry and the Pirates" reprints. The 1936 issues are where you'll find the illustrated adventures of Mae's a-MAE-zing cartoon clone — — the beautiful babe-licious Burma.

Mae West: Regis Philbin

How many remember when Regis came up to see Mae West in "Sextette"?
• • Native New Yorker Regis Philbin was born in August — — on 25 August 1931. As with Mae West, Regis claims Irish descent on his father's side.
• • From 1975 to 1983, he co-hosted "A.M. Los Angeles," a local morning talk show in California on KABC-TV with female co-hosts. Supposedly, Philbin's participation boosted the ratings and it became a top-shelf show.
• • While he was based on the West Coast, he had a cameo, playing himself in Mae West's last film when he was 47 years old. "Sextette," a 1978 Crown International comedy/ musical motion picture starring Mae West, also looped in walk-on bits featuring Hollywood gossip-vixen Rona Barrett and Mae's former lover George Raft playing themselves.
• • Regis Philbin moved to New York City to do a locally-produced morning talk show, which became nationally syndicated in September 1988 as "Live with Regis and Kathie Lee." He has an apartment on West 67th Street not far from his show's TV studios.
• • Celebrating his 76th birthday this month, Regis Philbin — — TV-talk show host, game-show host, singer, author, and TV personality — — is still going strong on the small screen.

Mae West: Burt Reynolds

In the last years of her life, when MAE WEST had an accident and was admitted to a hospital, her companion told the press that the actress had such an exciting dream about sexy Burt Reynolds that she had tumbled out of bed. In reality, the sad situation was that Mae had had a small stroke that caused her fall.
• • Born in 1936, the one-time Cosmopolitan Magazine pin-up turns 71 on February 11th.
• • Since 1988 Burt has had a little museum to call his own in Jupiter, Florida.
• • The Burt Reynolds & Friends Museum calls itself the largest celebrity museum in the Sunshine State.
• • Burt's living mausoleum - - in a former bank off the Intracoastal Waterway in Jupiter, about an hour north of Fort Lauderdale - - may have been a side trip for any roadsters en route to Super Bowl XLI. Not only is Burt a film star, he was once a sports figure.
• • Burt played football for the Florida State Seminoles. He starred in the classic 1970s football films "The Longest Yard" and "Semi-Tough." He was also famously featured in "Deliverance," shot in the Okefenokee Swamp on the border between Georgia and Florida.
• • The museum contains pictures of MAE WEST, Bette Davis, and Dinah Shore.
• • In the "Striptease" section of the museum, his co-star Demi Moore writes, "Burt, whatever it takes I'm going to get you!"
• • A 1983 autographed picture from Frank Sinatra says, "Dear Burt, why don't you cheer up and have a good time?"
• • If you are getting away from the winter chill in New York or the New England area, you can visit Burt Reynolds and Mae West in Jupiter.
