Mae West: Tars Stormed

On Thursday, 8 November 1978, when MAE WEST was 80 years old, syndicated columnist Nancy Anderson's interview with the screen legend ran. Rattled off from Mae's point-of-view and with no fact-checking, the text is rather cheeky. Let's enjoy it together.  This is Part 5 of  this entertaining piece.

• • Opening night was no great shakes with Mae and company playing to a poor house. And the next day the theater proprietor explained that decent folk had been frightened away by the shocking word on the marquee. However, a few sailors had been in the audience who took word back to the New Haven Navy base that something unusual had hit town. As a result, on the next evening, tars all but stormed the playhouse.

• • The Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey has been put up for auction, with a reserve of $2.5 million. The pier dates back to 1898 but suffered severe storm damage in 1904 and devastating fires in 1969 and 1982 which destroyed the remainder of the original structure. At one time the pier showcased stars of the caliber of Charlie Chaplin, Benny Goodman, Mae West and Frank Sinatra, but it consists now of 24 rides, games and prize wheels.
