A long article on MAE WEST appeared in August 1976, timed for her birthday. An excerpt from the feature put together by Hollywood reporter Robert L. Rose is below.
• • "They still come up and see Mae West at home" • •
• • by Robert L. Rose (IUM News Service) • •
• • Cary Grant: You were wonderful tonight.
• • Mae West: I'm always wonderful at night.
• • Cary: Tonight I thought you were especially good.
• • Mae: When I'm good, I'm very good. But when I'm bad, I'm better.
• • Cary: If I could only trust you.
• • Mae: You can ... Hundreds have.
• • Robert L. Rose wrote: These are some of the one-liners Mae West is famous for from her 1933 movie "I'm No Angel," starring Mae West and written by Mae West and co-starring her leading man (and discovery), Cary Grant.
• • She was 40 and suddenly the nation's sex symbol. Everybody was stealing her lines, "Come up and see me sometime," "Oh, go peel a grape," "It's not the men in your life — — it's the life in your men that counts," "Give a man a free hand and he'll try to put it all over you."
• • By her own latest count, she was born 83 years ago this week — — August 17, 1893, in Brooklyn — — the same year as Mao Tse-Tung, Huey Long, Omar Bradley, Warner Baxter, Harold Lloyd, Edward G. Robinson, Jimmy Durante, and Cole Porter. The times seem long ago and far away. Most of her contemporaries are gone. But not Miss West.
• • Today she is planning to star in another movie, one she wrote herself, opposite six leading men, and she dares you to give her the horse laugh. The picture is scheduled to go into production on the Goldwyn Studio lot in mid-October. . . .
• • To be continued tomorrow.

• • On Friday, 20 August 1915 in Variety • •
• • An article "May West in Pictures" (sic) appeared in Variety's issue dated for Friday, 20 August 1915.
• • Spelling her name Mae with a "y," Variety wrote: "May West, the vaudeville comedienne, has signed a contract with the U [Universal Pictures] to go to the coast for four weeks."
• • Stills I've seen from this audition show Mae lying across a bed, looking frisky. Hmm.
• • On Thursday, 20 August 1970 • •
• • Hollywood hipsters, hams, and hanger-ons received an invitation to "Sights and Sounds of Mae West" and the event was scheduled for Thursday, 20 August 1970.
• • Overheard in Hollywood • •
• • Perhaps surprisingly, Miss Mae West deplores the current film trend toward sex and nudity.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: "Now they have no more stories in Hollywood, so they simply throw naked bodies at the audience."
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • An article in an Australian paper mentioned Mae West.
• • The Argus wrote: A portion of the Warburton road, noted for its curves, was referred to as the Mae West stretch at the Transport Regulation Board's sitting yesterday, and Macedon was described as "a place of the elite." ...
