In August of 1976, a long interview with MAE WEST was published, timed for her birthday. Continued from yesterday, another excerpt from the exclusive feature by Hollywood correspondent Robert L. Rose is below.
• • "They still come up and see Mae West at home" • •
• • Written by Robert L. Rose (IUM News Service) • •
• • Most of her contemporaries are gone. But not Miss West. Today she is planning to star in another movie, one she wrote herself, opposite six leading men, and she dares you to give her the horse laugh. The picture is scheduled to go into production on the Goldwyn Studio lot in mid-October.
• • The Hollywood lot is only a few blocks from the apartment where she gives an interview, talking about her life and work, sex, and her fascination with the occult and the afterlife.
• • "I'm always working, writing, and doing. I'm always busy. I spend a lot of my time at my ranch in the San Fernando Valley," she said.
• • Miss West had just made an entrance into the white-carpeted living room, decked with white overstuffed furniture, a large gilt-edged mirror and chairs, and photograph after photograph of Mae West. She doesn't look much different from her pictures. She is vigorous and very much alive. Her voice is strong and very Mae-Westy. She can still give a saucy wiggle and wink, and her long blonde wig matches the one she wore in "My Little Chickadee," in one of her famous roles, opposite W. C. Fields.
• • "Mae massages her breasts with cocoa butter" • •
• • "I do exercises," she said. "I never eat anything until I think, 'What is this going to do for me?' I've never smoked or drank. I have all my own natural teeth. I always get plenty of sleep." As for her figure, she confided in her biography, "Goodness Had Nothing to Do with It," that she massages her breasts with cocoa butter every night, and sometimes in the morning, and sprays them with cold water. "This treatment kept them right up where they were supposed to be," she said. "The painter, Degas, called breasts 'the eyes of the torso.' There was a family rumor when I was a child that my paternal grandmother possessed three well-formed breasts. Personally, I have managed rather well with only two."
• • In her interview, she recalled that the boys of the RAF in World War II thought so, too, naming their life-saving sea jackets after her. "They showed it to me at an RAF base and I said, 'yeah ... I can see the resemblance.' They screamed," she laughed. "Well, they called me the lifesaver of the movie industry before — — and this was a double jackpot."

• • The headline "Mae West Will Join Oxford Group" ran in several papers.
• • "It is a wonderful work," Mae said. "I owe my success to the fact that I have been practicing that philosophy in recent years."
• • On Monday, 21 August 1944 in Life • •
• • An article "Catherine Was Great — — but Mae West Makes Her Dull" was printed along with photos in Life Magazine (pages 71— 72) in the issue dated for Monday, 21 August 1944.
• • Overheard in Hollywood • •
• • An interview with Miss Mae West quite naturally led to talk of sex, since she was the pioneer of more permissive entertainment.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: "When I was making pictures, I couldn't even say a 'hell' or 'damn' on the screen. The church people watched me like a hawk. Where are the church people today? How can they allow such things as you see on the screen?"
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • An article in a British paper mentioned Mae West.
• • Dion Dassanayake wrote: Nguyen Thi Tru has lived through two world wars and seen the globe and her home country of Vietnam change beyond recognition. She said her secret to living a long life is staying optimistic and helping other people feel "relaxed and happy."
• • Dion Dassanayake wrote: Mrs Tru has an ID card which states that her birthday is May 4 1893, meaning she was born the same year as British composer Ivor Novello and US sex symbol Mae West. ...
