Mae West: Fourth Day Fourth Month

Whenever MAE WEST was in New York City, she favored places where her friends could be found. Several variety artists who had shared a stagebill with her wound up on the Bowery, entertaining in a curious establishment — — a legendary 1890s-style saloon at 267 Bowery that was part tourist trap and part alcoholic haven.
• • In 1934, Sammy's Bowery Follies opened under the direction of impresario Sammy Fuchs, 30, who ran his vaudeville restaurant and cabaret (between East Houston and Stanton) until his death in 1969, attracting out-of-towners and slumming parties to skid row.

• • The fourth day of the fourth month turned out to be full of many unforgettable moments. Three of these are below.
• • It was on 4 April 1928 that Mae's successful Bowery drama "Diamond Lil" first opened at Teller's in Brooklyn, NY. Lil's stage costumes were designed by Dolly Tree.
• • It was on 4 April 1930 that the infamous "Pleasure Man" obscenity trial came to an end.
• • On 4 April 1976 Mae was a guest on CBS-TV. This would be her final televised appearance on a show called "Back Lot, USA" with the elfin host Dick Cavett. During this prime time program, the screen queen discussed her colorful life and performed a long, elaborately staged medley of her jaunty 1930s hits. Mae was 72 years old at the time.

• • Born in Peking China, King Yan Wu, died on 20 March 2011. The 93-year-old and his wife had been residing for some time in Pacific Palisades, California, according to his family.
• • His obituary read: In 1959, King Yan Wu and his wife Sylvia Cheng became proprietors of Madame Wu's Garden restaurant in Santa Monica. The restaurant became well-known worldwide for its celebrity clientele who hailed from Hollywood, the political sphere and all over the world. The regular celebrities included, among others, Mae West, Cary Grant, George Burns, Charlton Heston, Elizabeth Taylor, Johnny Carson, Carol Burnett, Walter Matthau, Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg, Governor Pete Wilson, President Ronald Reagan, and Princess Grace Kelly. ...
