Occasionally, MAE WEST crossed paths with the Hollywood actor John Carradine.
• • John Carradine [5 February 1906 — 27 November 1988] • •
• • Native New Yorker John Carradine was born on Monday, 5 February 1906 as Richmond Reed Carradine. He was the son of an artist-reporter and a surgeon.
• • Raised in Poughkeepsie, New York, he attended art school and tried his hand at sculpture and portraiture. After making his stage debut in 1925, the six-foot-one beanpole moved on to cinema. Typecast during his mature years as a durable low-budget horror lead, it's hard to imagine him playing to the balcony in the great Shakespearean dramas, as he once did.
• • In "Myra Breckinridge" [1970] John Carradine played the surgeon. Release date: 24 June 1970.
• • In the cinema version of Gore Vidal's novel, which starred Mae West, the off-beat narrative begins as Myron Breckinridge [Rex Reed] is waiting for his sex-change operation while a stoned physician stumbles into the operating room — — veteran character actor John Carradine, then 64 years old — — and advises him not to have this surgical procedure.
• • John Carradine died in Milan, Italy on Sunday, 27 November 1988. He was 82.
• • On Thursday, 11 June 1936 • •
• • New York, June 10 (AP) — Supreme Court Justice Salvatore A. Cotillo expressed unreserved admiration today for Frank Wallace, an actor, because he wanted to be declared Mae West's husband. "I admire him," said the justice, "but I'm afraid there is nothing for me to do but dismiss the case."
• • Mae West's counsel contended that she had not been properly served in the suit.

• • Overheard in Hollywood • •
• • Edith Head costumed Mae West for "Myra Breckinridge." But according to Stanley Musgrove, Edith Head hinted at her monumental Myra misery when she told him, "God, I'm glad I drink!"
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: "I have never been away, so this 'Myra' picture is no comeback. I have just been waiting for the right role."
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • A film critic mentioned Mae West.
• • The one interesting point is Mae West • •
• • Joe Riddle wrote: The one interesting point is Mae West (as Hollywood talent scout Letitia Van Allen) who, at 78 was still feeling her oats. She got to sing two songs (which were part of her contract for making the film) and wrote her own dialogue. Maybe that’s why her lines are better than everyone else’s. She sings the Otis Redding song “Hard to Handle” and “You Gotta Taste All the Fruit.” . . .

blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a
newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the
mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and
career of Mae West, herself an American original.
