MAE WEST inspired many artists. Here is what Robert Indiana had to say about the icon, and how she inspired his work "THE AMERICAN DREAM, I, 1961."
• • Robert Indiana (born in 1928) wrote: “My ‘model’ was Mae West (appearing at the time of execution of this painting, on television’s Late, Late Show in ‘Night after Night’ – 1932) who is the most American bloom to have flowered on this ‘scene,’ which, in my case, is obviously *A*M*E*R*I*C*A*N*, and loaded with ‘personal,’ ‘topical,’ and ‘symbolic’ significance . . ."

• • On Tuesday, 27 July 1954 Mae West opened at the Congo Room. This exotic night spot, inside the Sahara Hotel in Las Vegas, offered patrons a full supper as they watched a live performance. If you were in the audience when "The Mae West Revue" was onstage in 1954, you might have selected Broiled Fresh Colorado Brook Trout, Maitre d'Hotel, for $5.25.

• • In a letter W.C. Fields sent to a studio exec regarding the upcoming 1940 film “My Little Chickadee” with Mae West, who apparently wasn't pleased with her face time in the script, W.C. Fields wrote that the sultry star need “only wave her little finger to have me pitch in and write scenes for her.”
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: "Don't forget to remind me about the policeman's balls — — I mean police show!" (movie dialogue from "Myra Breckinridge")

• • A fashion magazine mentioned Mae West.
• • The face of Chanel, model Diane Kruger said: “When I became a model, the fashion was those really skinny, thin eyebrows. During my very first photo shoot, this make-up artist in Germany was like, ‘yeah, we should really pluck your eyebrows,’ and I was like ‘yeah, sure.’ I looked like I was always astonished. I look back on those pictures; I look like I’m 100 years old because I look like Mae West. I’ve done it all," added Diane Kruger . . .
