MAE WEST was the ideal co-star, thought Elvis Presley. This is Part 4.
• • Hollywood Remembered — — Elvis Presley and Mae West by Darwin Porter • •
• • A secret late-night date • •
• • Darwin Porter wrote: Actually, Elvis had a late-night date with Ann-Margaret.
• • In urging him to stay, Mae West claimed that she liked to “audition” her leading men before signing a contract. “I want to know if they swing my way.”
• • Seeing doubt on Elvis’s face, she assured him, “I have the body of a 26-year-old gal.” In spite of the offer, he politely excused himself and headed for the door with Nick Adams trailing. [Born in 1931, Nick Adams died on 7 February 1968 of a drug overdose. He was 36.]
• • The next morning, Hal Wallis told Elvis that Mae West had liked him and would sign the contract. Before the deal could be made, Elvis’s manager, Col. Tom Parker, intervened.
• • He threatened to shut down production on the picture if West were signed. The savvy old showman knew that she’d rewrite the script, zapping it with her famous double-entendre one-liners.“

• • This was Part 4. Used with permission. To be concluded tomorrow with Part 5.

• • Life Magazine's issue dated for Friday, 6 March 1970 gave a back lot glimpse into the peculiar antics afoot on the set of Myra Breckinridge. Calvin Trillin reported that Rex Reed said their director looked like "a wolf with rabies."
• • Read Trillin's article and you'll see how tame Rex Reed's remark was in comparison to other opinions, grumbles, score-settling, and sniping. You'll also find out that Gore Vidal's script was rejected as unfilmmable, and who was hired to doctor the screenplay.
• • Overheard in Hollywood • •
• • Lew Garvey told us Mae West alternates her ranch visits with occasional calls on her sister Beverly who lives in a cozy hillside home in the fashionable Los Feliz district.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: "Sex is like a small business. You gotta protect it, watch over it. It's a matter of timing."
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • A fan magazine mentioned Mae West.
• • "It is a distinct blow to the industry as a whole — as well as an offense against public morals — when such disgraceful and disreputable offerings are made. For these reasons, the Hearst newspapers have refused to accept advertising for the film 'Klondike Annie' featuring Miss Mae West ...
