Written by Daniel Lord and staunch Catholic publisher Martin Quigley (who put out the important industry trade paper The Motion Picture Herald), it was an 18-page document that, among other things, directed that: "Excessive and lustful kissing, lustful embraces, suggestive postures and gestures, are not to be shown . . . In general passion should also be so treated that these scenes do not stimulate the lower and baser element . . . Obscenity in word, gesture, reference, song, joke, or by suggestion (even when likely to be understood only by part of the audience) is forbidden."
• • When this document came to the attention of Will Hays he said, "My eyes nearly popped out. This was the very thing I had been looking for."
