• • Paul Phaneuf wrote:   A few years earlier the Catholic Church had devised its own movie code, giving stricter direction and definition to its flock. Written by Daniel Lord and staunch Catholic publisher Martin Quigley (who put out the important industry trade paper The Motion Picture Herald), it was an 18-page document that, among other things, directed that: "Excessive and lustful kissing, lustful embraces, suggestive postures and gestures, are not to be shown . . . In general passion should also be so treated that these scenes do not stimulate the lower and baser element . . . Obscenity in word, gesture, reference, song, joke, or by suggestion (even when likely to be understood only by part of the audience) is forbidden."
