Mae West: Love Takes Time

In September 1934, MAE WEST sat down for a series of "Me and My Past" talks with the United Press syndicated reporter Leicester Wagner.  We will post excerpts from Chapter 5 in several installments.  This is excerpt cc.

• • Mae West said,  I have been in love at various points in my career, but as long as my mother lived, I shied from marriage. 
• • When she passed away, it released the only governor on possible marriage inclinations. When I came to Hollywood, I suppose I doubled my marriage "hazard."
• • Some man may come along and sweep me off my feet. It can be done. I have had an opportunity to view first-hand what Hollywood is liable to do to marriage.  People with careers are too busy to spend enough time on their marriage.
• • I have seen several matches which should have been happy ones, crack up — — mainly because of that lack of time.

• • Love takes time.  You have to work at marriage, just like a career.   I'm a woman who takes her time about anything, and this time problem wouldn't hold me back if and when the right man comes along.

• • Though Mae had taken good care of her health, shortly after her 71st birthday she was hospitalized and her ailments were scrutinized. The diagnosis was diabetes.
• • As Mae was quietly convalescing at home, with Paul Novak at her side, she received the worst news. Her beloved brother John Edwin West, 64, had suffered a massive heart attack.  Mae made arrangements for her beloved brother's body to be sent back to Brooklyn to the family crypt.
• • In 1933, Mae West posed with her brother, her father, Jim Timony (the tallest person), and her sister Beverly in Hollywood. Her brother John is at the far left..

• • The premiere of "I'm No Angel," starring Mae West was held on Thursday, 12 October 1933 in Hollywood.  A triumphant date in Hollywood for the Brooklyn bombshell.

• • Mae West is irresistible, as she sits at the counter, totally distracting the soda jerk in the animated feature "Soda Squirt" released in the USA on 12 October 1933.
• • This delightful cartoon features a brief parade of major Hollywood stars. Most are shown emerging from a limo.  Mae West is a mainstay here, shown in several scenes.
• • "Soda Squirt" was directed by Ub Iwerks.

• • William Diehl, the successful suspense author, known for such bestsellers as "Primal Fear," revealed that he had Mae West for a baby sitter.

• • Mae West said:  "Whenever I get a bit overweight I work it off making a picture."

• • The Desert Sun discussed Mae West.
• • Celebrity reporter Mike Connolly wrote:  Mae will be 68 years old next August 17th. She looks anywhere from 45 to 50 and, under certain lights, even younger. Her figure is great.  . . . “I like TV,” Mae said. “I got a lot of good reaction to the Academy Awards show I did with Rock Hudson. I also have three writing projects going, or perhaps I should call them rewriting projects."  . . .
