MAE WEST enjoyed the friendship of many reporters as well as the Los Angeles Times film critic Kevin Thomas. This is a very brief excerpt from one of his wonderful columns.
• • "Mae West's 100th (or so) birthday is coming up. What was it about this larger-than-life actress that changed Hollywood forever? A look back by a friend and observer."
• • Kevin Thomas wrote: In the years since her death in November, 1987, after a series of strokes, there have been a number of books and articles, and even a TV movie, that have told us a lot about her life and career, yet she retains in our collective imagination that enigmatic quality that she shared with a radically different screen siren, Greta Garbo (whom she met late in life, prompting her to declare that Garbo could still work "if she'd just accept character parts"). Just in time for West's centennial, Universal has just released its "My Little Chickadee" and her eight Paramount pictures on cassette as "The Ultimate Mae West Collection." . . .

• • The Catholic Herald is published in Ireland. An odd image in color appeared at the top of page 1 (right side): a portrait of Mae West with Francis of Assisi, announcing this peculiar cover story: "What Unites Mae West and Saint Francis? Father Michael Seed explains on page 9." This was the issue dated for Friday, 11 August 2006.

• • The very charming "La Cieca" wrote: At the risk of contradicting Mae West (and, believe me, "La Cieca" sets aside a couple of hours a day to averting any such lèse-majesté!), too much of a good thing can be not so much wonderful as impossible. . . .

• • Thank
you for reading, sending questions, and posting comments during these
past twelve years. The other day we entertained 3,497 visitors. And we
reached a milestone recently when we completed 3,500 blog posts. Wow!
• • By the Numbers • •
• • The Mae West Blog was started twelve years ago in July 2004. You are reading the 3506th
blog post.
Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a
newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the
mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and
career of Mae West, herself an American original.
