• • The John Kobal Foundation wrote: “In 1969, John Kobal, having spent a couple of fruitless years trying to track down some of these photographers, was sent by The Sunday Times in the UK to interview Mae West, the veteran movie star, who was filming Myra Breckenridge in Los Angeles. Whilst waiting for her on set, Kobal noticed an elderly man moving round taking photos and asked him what he was doing.
• • The man explained that he was taking the publicity stills for the film. “And your name?” asked Kobal. “George Hurrell.” “THE George Hurrell!” replied an astonished Kobal hardly daring to believe that he might have just stumbled upon the doyen of the Hollywood Photographers. The photographer nodded. “But everyone told me you were dead!” Thus began Kobal’s close working relationship with those surviving Hollywood Portrait Photographers that led to the mounting of many museum exhibitions all round the world . . .
