It was Sunday, 9 June 1935 and MAE WEST was in San Diego, California.
• • Unfortunately, film star Mae West, arriving in San Diego on 9 June 1935, had missed the first visit of the 115 warships of the Pacific Fleet by twenty-four hours.
• • "I'm sorry I didn't know the Fleet was coming in tomorrow, as I certainly would have come down then. I'm very patriotic that way," the film star told a reporter from the San Diego Union.
• • On hand to greet the Pacific Fleet were President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, former president Herbert Hoover, prize fighter Jack Dempsey, evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson, and 15,000 school children, among others, as the warships steamed into San Diego Bay.
• • On Sunday, 9 June 1935 in The N. Y. Times • •
• • Mae West did a few interviews with John Moffatt. In an article printed in the Sunday Times on 9 June 1935, Mae discussed parting with Libby Taylor, her longtime maid. Mae said, "When she began wanting me to wake her up in the morning, I told her she'd better stop being a maid and give her all to the public."
• • Overheard in Hollywood • •
• • Mae West was silent when her muscle men mixed in D.C.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: "An ounce of performance is worth pounds of promises."
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • A syndicated gossip column written by Earl Wilson in NYC mentioned Mae West, who was in New York City playing the role of Diamond Lil on Broadway.
• • "Mae West Gives Earl a Necktie for Birthday" • •
• • Earl Wilson wrote: New York, NY, June 9 — I'm the blissful owner of a birthday tie given to me by Mae West. A friend pointed out to me to me that it's Mae Westian in design. The figures on it are fig leaves, the friend said.
• • "You know," I commented to Mae West, "I wouldn't know a fig leaf if I saw one."
• • "You mean," said Mae, "you wouldn't know one if you saw it on a necktie." ...
