MAE WEST is one of the idols of the formidable painter Marlene Dumas, 61, whose muses also include Simone de Beauvoir and Dolly Parton. Ms. Dumas hails from Cape Town, South Africa, where she was born on 3 August 1953.
• • The Tate's curator wrote: Discovering the work of the French philosopher as a student, Marlene Dumas began incorporating de Beauvoir’s theories into her work, looking at perceptions of gender and sexuality. The artist also used Mae West and Dolly Parton to question society’s treatment of women, and considered herself to share more than a passing resemblance to the stars.
