MAE WEST agreed to dine with the reporter and film critic Mal Vincent in 1969. He recently published an article about his evening with the movie queen at the Casa D'oro Restaurant on Santa Monica Boulevard in California. Though the March screening has passed, these Westian comments are still fascinating. This installment is Part 3 of 3.
• • "Mae West screening stirs memory of getting lucky" • •
• • Mal Vincent recalled: Miss West then explained why she had agreed to do the interview. "I like your style — — at least what I know of it. I remember your byline from a review you wrote of my album, 'Way Out West.' So many of the other writers seemed surprised that I was doing a rock 'n' roll album. Actually, I invented the beat. I was rocking before most of these kids were born. The beat never changes once you've got it. Some of the kids don't have it, but they'll learn." She was 76 at the time.
• • Mal Vincent noted: Miss West does have some loose connections to Tidewater. She remembered perfectly an appearance at the Colonial Theater in Norfolk. "Norfolk, Virginia? Yeah," she purred as she rolled her eyes toward the ceiling. "Great town. It was hot in its day. I imagine it's cooled down a little now. "I think I was there when the fleet was in — — a great time to be there. But I had to make it clear that I was interested only in officers. Preferably admirals. I think I met a rear admiral there."
• • Mal Vincent wrote: I reminded her that in her autobiography, "Goodness Had Nothing to Do With It," she wrote about how a man got in a fight over her in an Italian restaurant across the street from the Colonial Theater.
• • Mal Vincent revealed: "It's a familiar story," she said, patting her blond hair to keep it in place. "I don't remember the man, but I remember the incident.... Anyway, I cooled this guy down by dumping a plate of spaghetti in his lap. Yeah, I remember it. I always kept a diary. Keep a diary and someday it'll keep you." On her travels, she observed: "Good girls go to heaven. Bad girls go everywhere."
• • Mal Vincent added: Her invitation to "come up and see me sometime" has lingered temptingly over the decades. On Monday night, you can take her up on the offer.
• • This concludes this article by Mal Vincent, reprinted in three consecutive parts.
• • Mal Vincent has been a longtime culture writer for The Virginian-Pilot.
