"Myra Breckinridge" [1970] starring MAE WEST, and directed by Michael Sarne, was a curious 94 minute adaptation of Gore Vidal's novel. Do you remember B.S. Pully who was seen as Tex?
• • B.S. Pully [14 May 1910 — 6 January 1972] • •
• • Born in New York City in mid-May — — on Saturday, 14 May 1910 — — was a little boy called Murray Lerman. Drawn to show business, the hefty kibitzer became an off-color nightclub comedian. In 1944, at the age of 34, he parlayed his show business connections right into the major casting offices in Tinseltown.
• • From 1944 — 1970, B.S. Pully was cast as a Broadway actor along with 22 projects for TV and motion pictures. Burly with a sassy streetwise style and a flair for physical comedy, B.S. Pully aced the memorable role of Big Jule in the stage and also in the 1955 film version of "Guys and Dolls."
• • He was seen in the popular TV series "Get Smart" [1969] and bid adieu to his film fans with "Myra Breckinridge" [1970] starring Mae West. At 60 years old, he retired from show business.
• • Actor B.S. Pully died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 6 January 1972. He was 61.
• • On Saturday, 14 May 1927 in Collier's • •
• • After Mae's arrest in 1927, Booth Tarkington was commissioned to write an article — — and "When Is It Dirt?" [published in Collier's, The National Weekly, on Saturday, 14 May 1927] discussed the issue of censorship and government intervention.
• • An author himself, Tarkington never champions the rights of the censors, of course, in his thoughtful essay. Though Mae's name is not mentioned in his piece, the magazine page was designed around a huge photo of Mae, looking very annoyed, in court.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: "Right now [1 March 1936] my sister Beverly Osborne heads a Hollywood chow-mein factory, and she's married to a Russian who plays bit parts in the movies."
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • Hollywood columnists often mentioned Mae West's interest in the occult.
• • Paul Harrison wrote: Mae is believed to have some interest in occult matters. She is convinced that she brings luck to people associated with her.
• • "I never think anything but success, success, success. Other people catch the spirit of it from me." ...
